Building permits in the Roanoke Valley jumped more than 20 percent in both number and value in July compared with a year ago.
The largest projects were in Roanoke and included $3.38million for remodeling Breckinridge Middle School, $890,000 for a warehouse for Airborne Express, $845,000 for remodeling Jefferson Plaza office building at 1030 S. Jefferson St. by CommuniCare, and $376,000 for remodeling the Revco drugstore on Grandin Road.
Salem issued a permit for $347,000 for a new warehouse for Hershey's Creamery. Roanoke County reported permits for an addition to William Byrd High School and for construction of India Heritage Church at Cotton Hill.
