BOWLES, Michael E., Sr., 52, of 1808 Oyster Bay Lane, Suffolk, died Tuesday, August 13, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital. Mr. Bowles, a native of Roanoke, was a production supervisor for Planters Peanut Company in Suffolk. Survivors include his wife, Linda Willis Bowles; a daughter, Kristy Williamson; a son, Michael E. Bowles II, all of Suffolk; his mother, Mary Worley Bowles of Ports mouth; a sister, Barbara B. Smith of Fairhope, Ala.; and four grandchildren. BROWN-FIZER, Eric Emanuel, 33, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, August 12, 1996. He was born January 24, 1963, in Columbus, Ohio. He was a member of Williams Memorial Baptist Church, and attended Roanoke City Public Schools and the American School of Beauty Culture. He leaves to rejoice in his memory his natural parents, Carol C. Brown and Lawrence E. Brown Sr. of Roanoke; one sister, Sophia (Perry) Medley of Elizabethton, Tenn.; five brothers, Lawrence Edward (Karen) Brown Jr. of Savannah, Ga., Lawrence Anthony Brown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jeffrey Lee Brown of Savannah, Ga., Gregory Lee Brown and Shannon P. Brown of Roanoke; his grandmother, Bessie Brown of Roanoke; eight aunts; two uncles; a devoted uncle and aunt, Deacon Lawrence and Hattie Brown of Roanoke; his parents and family of the heart, Walter M. Fizer Sr. and wife Evelyn of Roanoke; sisters, Sandra M. Fizer Jones of Richmond, Jo Ann F. (Jerome) Hayden, Anita F. (Rudolph) Ford, Towanda (Rev. BUCHANAN, Grace (Coulthard), 83, of Saltville/Rich Valley, Va., widow of James T. Buchanan, died Wednesday, August, 14, 1996 in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Va. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, James ""Gene"" and Maxine Buchanan, Rich Valley, a brother, Harvey Coulthard, Emory; four grandchildren, Pam, Rita, Jim, and Allen Buchanan, Rich Valley, four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 18, 1996 in the Locust Cove Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Kincheloe officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgedale Cemetery. CANDLER, Betty Nichols, 71, of Roanoke, gently passed into the bosom of the Lord on Tuesday, August 13, 1996, at the home of her son, Dr. Robert A. Candler of Virginia Beach. Mrs. Candler was born in Pike County, Ky., in 1925 and was married in 1948 to Maj. George Orville Candler Jr., USMC retired, of Roanoke, who recently passed away. Betty Jo was a graduate of Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1948, and had retired from nursing after caring for patients at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley and Catawba State Geriatric Hospital, among others. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, G. Michael Candler and his wife Cynthia Hughes Candler of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Dr. Robert A. Candler and his wife Shannon Russell Candler of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Brian Candler and Tracy Candler of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Zachary Candler, John Candler and Abigail Candler of Virginia Beach, and several nieces and nephews. A Christian Funeral Liturgy will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 16, 1996, at the Church of the Ascension, with Fr. James E. Parke officiating. GRIFFITH, William Samuel, Professor of the University of British Columbia, a resident of Point Roberts, Wash., and dual citizen of Canada and the U.S.A., passed with grace at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Wash., at 1:20 a.m. Monday, August 12, 1996. He had been battling cancer for almost a year. Born in Johnstown, Pa., on November 25, 1931, to Myrtle Hess and Samuel Nelson Griffith, he is survived by his wife, Beverly Breland Griffith of Point Roberts; their three children, Thomas Nelson Griffith of Seattle, Wash., Kathryn Griffith Moore of Cobb, Calif., and Rebecca Leigh Hayashi of Maui, Hawaii; five grandchildren; his sister, Evelyn Mulford, of San Bernardino, Calif., and five nieces and nephews. He earned his B.S. degree from Penn State University, his M.S. from Louisiana State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He was president of the Point Roberts Registered Voters Association from 1992 to the present, and a director of the Pioneer Project for the Development of Housing for Seniors in Point Roberts. His memberships, awards, contracts and publications were extensive, as was his doctoral student supervision. He was a loving, devoted husband and father. He enjoyed pla ying the piano and organ, walking on the beach, traveling, camping, gardening, nibbling the ears of his granddaughters, reading with his grandson, and playing a wide variety of board games with numerous friends and all the grandchildren. Professor Griffith was a man of morals, principle and integrity. He was recognized by his colleagues for his intelligence, wit and tenacity. His views were influential in helping to shape the direction the field of adult education has taken over the past 30 years. He was a tireless contributing member of all the communities in which he lived. He gave of his time and energies without any consideration of personal gain or fame; his passion was to serve the common good. His mission was education with the personal conviction that, as a result of education, the world would be a better place. He leaves us with that challenge. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Community Lutheran Church of Point Roberts at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 1996. HAYSLETT, James William, 78, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 1996, at his Salem home. He had 26 years o f service with Stuart McGuire in Salem. He played minor league baseball for the Chicago Cubs in 1939. He served with the 2nd Armored Division in World War II under General Patton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Hayslett Niedfeldt. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Lucille Hayslett; two sons and daughter-in-law, Samuel William and Brenda Hayslett, Salem, Carl James Hayslett and partner, David M. Frink, Richmond; two brothers, Robert Hayslett, John Hayslett, both of Lexington; one sister, Josephine Hayslett, Lexington; a grandson and wife, William Sean and Mary Lynne Hayslett, Salem; a granddaughter and husband, Cheri and John Lankford, Roanoke; two great-grandchildren, Amanda Megan Hayslett, Heather Katherine Hayslett, both of Salem. HUNDLEY, Clara Coffey, 82, of Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, August 13, 1996. Mrs. Hundley was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph U. Hundley; two brothers, Willard and James Coffey; and two sisters, Beatrice Prevette and Inez Carson. Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Barbara Coffey of Salem; a special nephew and niece, James V. and Elizabeth (Dianne) Carson, Rocky Mount. HUNTER, Clyde Monroe, 68, of 907 Holly Springs Rd., Mt. Airy, N.C., husband of Mrs. Nellie Gilley Hunter, died Tuesday evening, August 13, 1996, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Hunter was born in Surry County, N.C., April 4, 1928, son of the late Monroe and Roxie Joyce Hunter, and was a farmer and paint contractor. He was a charter member of Holly Springs Ruritan Club and a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nellie Gilley Hunter of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carole Hunter and Don Walker of Winston-Salem, N.C., Pat Hunter and Charles Holcomb, and Cindy Hunter and Dennis Hicks, all of Roanoke; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim C. and Teri Fulk Hunter of Raleigh, N.C.; one grandson, Brian Wolfe of Charlotte, N.C.; two granddaughters, Tara Walker of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Jennifer Wolfe of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, Catherine Wolfe and Michael Wolfe, both of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Lester Hunter and Elbert Hunter, both of Mt. Airy, N.C. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by a brother, Wes Hunter. JOBE, Ronald Kenneth, 50, of Salem, died Monday, August 12, 1996. JONES, Frances C., 79, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 14, 1996. Mrs. Jones was a member and secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood Railroad Trainman Lodge #377. She was a member and former pianist of Air-Lee Court Baptist Church. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Don and Dayle Jones; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Wayne Saunders; dedicated granddaughter, Katrenna; two gre at-grandchildren. LOREE, Andy, of Prescott, Ariz., died Thursday, August 8, 1996, in Tucson. He was the son of Evelyn G. ``Marnie'' Loree and the late C. Wayne Loree of Route 1, Henry. LUCAS, Mary Lillian Akers, 78, of Riner, died Tuesday, August 13, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mike Eanes; and a great-granddaughter, Kathryn Lucas. Born November 4, 1917, she was a lifelong resident of the Riner area. She was a homemaker and enjoyed assisting her husband of 61 years in the operation of the family dairy farm. She was a member of the Valley View Primitive Baptist Church and was active in several farm and homemaking organizations throughout her life. Surviving are her husband, Raymond J. Lucas; one sister, Fannie Sue Lucas, Riner; a son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Thelma Lucas, Riner; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Harold Eanes, Christiansburg; a granddaughter, Myran and Doug Moore, Ellensburg, Wash.; grandson, Captain Nathan and Karen Lucas, West Point, N.Y.; great-grandson, Dustin Moore, Ellensburg, Wash.; great-granddaughters, Kacie Altizer, Ellensburg, Wash., Elizabeth and Carolyn Lucas, West Point, N.Y. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, Christiansburg, conducted by Elder Raymond Goad and Elder Willard Cox. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. He was the son of the late Samuel W. and Cynthia McGavock Williams, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
