ALBERT, Ruby Iris, 66, of Pearisburg, died Sunday, August 25, 1996 in Roanoke Memorial Cancer-Rehab Center. She was born January 20, 1930 at Glen Lyn, Va., the daughter of the late Aaron and Bessie Lovern Pennington. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vaunise Lovern Haga and brothers, Sceral Lovern, Meril Lovern, Darl Lovern and Cyrus Clay Pennington. She is survived by her husband, George (Bill) Albert; two sons, George E. Albert, Missoula, Montana, Gary P. Albert, Pearisburg; a daughter, Janice (Jan) Dunford, Dublin; five sisters, Mrs. Jewel Issacs, Vandalia, Ohio, Mrs. Imogene Menke, Vandalia, Ohio, Mrs. Dixie Garvin, Seabring, Florida, Mrs. Lois Simmerman, Barren Springs, Mrs. Geraldine (Jerrie) Roe, Gate City; a brother, Kenneth Pennington, Dublin; three grandchildren, Jess Dunford, Dublin, Michael Dunford, Pearisburg, Angel Albert, Dayton, Wyoming. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating. Burial in the Staffordsville Cemetery, Staffordsville. Visiting will be at the funeral home Monday after 1 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
ARNETT, Mildred Jane, 65, died Friday, August 23, 1996, in Seattle, Wash., after an extended illness. She was the daughter of Eugene and Hazel Garland Arnett of Anthras, Tenn. She is survived by her daughter, Arnette Crocker Tressel, and grandchildren, Gretchen Hunter Tressel and Paul Samuel Tressel III, all of Salem and Smith Mountain Lake, Va. She is also survived by daughters Alene Brede of Seattle and Stephanie Adams of Dayton, Ohio. She had 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by Ho wden Kennedy of Seattle, with memorial and graveside services attended by family and friends on Saturday morning.

AVERY, Howard Shaeffer, 90, of Mahwah, N.J., died Saturday, August 24, 1996. Born in Canon City, Colo., on April 18, 1906, he lived in Roanoke, Va., from 1917 to 1933. He married Mary Louise Steele of Roanoke in 1931, and lived in Mahwah from 1935 until his death. He is survived by his children, Mary Avery Gerlach and her husband, Richard, of Winthrop, N.Y., Byrd Avery Lochtie of Eureka, Calif., Howard Shaeffer (``Shae"") Avery Jr. and his wife, Gwenda, of Marietta, Ga., and Giles Alexander Avery of Mahwah; his nephew, Jon Avery of West Chester, Pa.; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Steele Avery, in 1985, and by his brother, Robert D. Avery, and his son-in-law, Robert M. Lochtie. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 1996. BOWMAN, Samuel Calvin, 76, of Troutville, died Saturday, August 24, 1996. He was a lifetime member of the Trinity Church of the Brethren; and is survived by his wife, Carlene Rieley Bowman; one son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Peggy Bowman of Vinton; three daugh ters and two sons-in-law, Linda B. and Vic Sisson, Nancy B. and Sam Pillis, all of Troutville, Anne B. Stump of Hardy; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Margaret Stone, Rachel Bowman, both of Roanoke, Caroline and Calvin Firebaugh of Troutville; eight grandchildren. BROWN, Maxine Loretta Robinson, 44, of Roanoke, passed away at her home early Sunday morning, August 25, 1996. She was the daughter of the late Curtis E. Robinson, Sr. and Barbara Robinson Shavers. Survivors include her husband, Andrew Brown, Jr.; two daught ers, Lyndetta D. Ellington and Chauntae C. Brown; one stepdaughter, Dawn C. CHILDRESS, Ronald Wayne, 49, of Moneta, passed away at his home at Smith Mountain Lake on Sunday, August 25, 1996. Ron had a lifelong interest in wrestling, which began at Northside High School under Coach Ken Shelton and continued at Appalachian State University, where he continued his wrestling career. After college, he came back to Roanoke and started his teaching and coaching career at William Fleming, and then to Breckenridge Junior High School, where his teams won numerous Valley championships. He was recently chosen recipient and inductee in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Jerrie; his parents, Ed and Claudine Wilson Childress; two brothers and their wives, Ben and Lynda Childress, and Tim and Lisa Childress; three stepchildren, Gary, Stephenie and Kimberly; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Linnea McDonald; his mother-in-law, Bobbie McDonald; two nephews, Shawn and Kelly Childress, and three lifelong friends, Mike Winston, Larry Hall and Stan Parker. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, at the Lotz Salem Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private. DeBUSK, J. Roger, 68, of 208 Pelham Dr., Waynesboro, died Saturday, August 24, 1996 at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville. He was born August 27, 1927 in Roanoke, a son of the late Walter R. and Fannie Trout DeBusk. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro and a retiree of Genicom Corporation. Mr. DeBusk was a consultant for C. R. Hudgins Plating in Lynchburg. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Lee Lodge 209 A.F. & A.M. and a member of Scottish Rites in Lynchburg. He was District Masonic Home Ambassador of the 19th Masonic District. He was a member of BPOE Elks Lodge No. 2270. He received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Roanoke College and received a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Lynchburg College. Survivors include his wife, Anne Heitzenrater DeBusk, of the residence; two sons, A. Neal Lowe and his wife, Anita, of Lynchburg and John DeBusk and his wife, Sandy, of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Cheryl Lowe of Hampton; one stepson, Richard K. Heitzenrater and his wife, Janine Riley, of Stuarts Draft; and three stepdaughters, Mrs.. Terry Anderson and her husband, Dan, of Staunton, Mrs. Karen Hempstead and her husband, Ralph, of Struthers, Ohio, and Ms. Kathleen Heitzenrater of Waynesboro; one brother, Walter R. DeBusk, Jr., of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister, Jean Rich, Gastonia, N.C.; six grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Adcock DeBusk. Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 28, 1996, at the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, conducted by the Rev. Jim Wood and Dr. Roy Creech, with burial following in Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Rick Heitzenrater, Gerald E. LUNNIE, Frances M., Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.), 82, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, August 24, 1996. Mr. Lunnie was born in Victoria, Vt., on June 13, 1914, and was a son of the late John and Catherine Shorey Lunnie. Col. Lunnie was a graduate of Great Falls College in Great Falls, Mont. Col. Lunnie was a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, beginning with service in the Philippines prior to World War II. He was captured there shortly after the war's outbreak and was held as a POW for nearly three years. After his release, Col. Lunnie received a regular commission and was attached to the Medical Services Corps. He was assigned to various commands throughout the United States and abroad, including the Pentagon, Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio and USAF Headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany. Col. Lunnie's service to his country was recognized by the awarding of numerous medals, decorations and commendations. He retired to Pearisburg in 1966 and assumed the duties as Administrator of Giles Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth Darby Lunnie; three sons, Frances M. Lunnie Jr. of Washington, D.C., William W. Lunnie of Monroe, Conn., and Douglas D. Lunnie of Roanoke; a sister, Pauline L. Layer of Sea Girt, N.J., and five grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A memorial service to follow at 8 p.m., with the Rev. Dennis Gillespie officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg, where Col. Lunnie was a member.

RICHARDSON, Sherrel V., 73, of Marion, died Saturday, August 24, 1996, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. An Army veteran of World War II, he retired from the Brunswick Corporation after many years of service. He was a member of Marion VFW Post #4667, and Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins. He is survived by his wife, Georgia Tilson Richardson of Marion; one daughter, Virginia Sarvis of Morristown, Tenn.; four sons, Willis E. (``Willie"") Richardson of Marion, Robert Dale (``Birdie"") Richardson of Jacksonville, Fla., William (``Bill"") Tilson of Marion and Daniel Tilson of Alexandria; three sisters, Gussie Widener of Roanoke, Mrs. Joe (Katherine) Ellis and Ruby Taylor of Marion; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. SPARKS, Roberta Mae Dyson, 60, of 2034 Twin Oaks Avenue, Pulaski, passed away Sunday, August 25, 1996 in the Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital. Born June 16, 1936 in Hemphill, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Ray Dyson and Laura Florence Bowman Dyson. She was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, Pulaski, Va. She was an assistant Children's Sunday School Teacher. She was a retired employee of the former Rose's Department Store in the Claims Dept., with twenty-four years of service. Surviving are her husband, Kenneth (Ken) Robert Sparks, Pulaski, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah S. and Jack Brunk, Dublin, Va., Linda S. and Eddie Woodyard, Dublin, Va.; three grandchildren, Monica Brunk, Steven Brunk and Staci Woodyard, all of Dublin; one sister and brother-in-law, Annabell and Lowell Taylor, Bluewell, West Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Billy and June Dyson; Bluewell, West, Va.
