Prevent Blindness Virginia is recommending that parents have their children's eyes checked as they begin a new school year and is offering free brochures on vision problems that children might experience.
The group says one in four school children has a vision problem, and one in 20 children between the ages of 3 and 5 have a vision problem that could lead to blindness.
Vision problems can lead to impairment of speech and motor skills, and can hinder learning, causing to kids to be diagnosed as slow.
To get brochures on "Signs of Possible Eye Trouble in Children" and "Amblyopia" (lazy eye), call (804) 330-3195.
