Three-time State Amateur champion Tom McKnight of Galax fired a 1-under-par 71 Monday at Williamsburg's Golden Horseshoe Green Course to pace sectional qualifying for next month's USGA Mid-Amateur Championship.
McKnight earned one of three available spots for the 264-player Mid-Am, which will be contested Sept.28-Oct.3 at Hartford (Conn.) Golf Club and Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield, Conn.
Tazewell's Charlie Green and VMI graduate Robert Nussey of Richmond both shot 73 and won the final two spots in a playoff with former Richmond Amateur champion Russ Fricke.

* Nobody hit the hole-in-one lottery at Hanging Rock Golf Club on Monday.
None of the 22 golfers who qualified for the Kazim Temple Roanoke Valley $100,000 Hole In One Shootout was able to make an ace and cash in big bucks. Roanoke's Mark Funderburke came closest to making an ace and took home a $500 gift certificate.
Hanging Rock professional Billy McBride confirmed that the Kazim Temple/Mid-Atlantic PGA Club Pro Championship has been rescheduled for Oct.23. The tournament was schedule for August, but was postponed by rain.
* Roanoker Billy King fired a final-round 71 to finish tied for the eighth in a PGA Senior Series tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. King finished at 3-under 213 for the 54-hole tournament.
* VMI's soccer team was picked to finish sixth out of seven teams in the Southern Conference coaches' preseason poll. Furman is the favorite to win the league.
* Virginia Tech's women's soccer team is the coaches' preseason pick to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10's West Division. George Washington is favored to win the West, while UMass is the the favorite to win the East.
