BRAMMER, Billy M., (``Bill"") 65, of Sherwood Forest, Bassett, died Sunday, September 1, 1996 at Onslow Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville, N.C. Mr. Brammer was born May 6, 1931 in Bassett, a son of the late Noah G. Brammer and Lucy Mae Dalton Brammer of King's Grant, Martinsville. Brammer was employed by Bassett Furniture Industries on June 5, 1954 and was currently serving as Executive Vice President of Finance and Treasurer. He had served on me Board of Directors from 1980 - 1995. Brammer was also currently serving on the Board of Directors for First American Corporation. Brammer was a member of the Bassett Kiwanis Club and the Bassett Country Club, where he was a form president of both organizations. He was a member of and served on the Vestry of Christ Episcopal Church in Martinsville. A graduate of Bassett High School in 1948, he then received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Virginia Polytechnic Institute(VPI) in 1952. Brammer served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict as First Lieutenant of the Finance Corps. Brammer was former Director and Secretary of Southeastern Adhesives, Lenoir, N.C. and was on the Advisory Board of United Utility Fund, Atlantic Venture Partners and the First Union Bank. He was on the Board of Directors for both the local Red Cross Chapters and the former First Bassett Bank and Trust. He was also former chairman of the Martinsville and Henry County Economic Development Corporation and Blue Ridge Fisheries. He had served on the Board of Trustees for Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County and Carlisle School. In addition to his mother, Brammer is survived by his wife, Patricia Hitchen Brammer; a son, William Milton Brammer, MD of Dalton, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Janell) Rogers of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Grady (Denise) Nickles of Savannah, Ga.; four grandchildren; a sister, Thelma Brammer Meadors of Danville; and a brother, John Lee Brammer of Richmond. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church, Martinsville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Collins Funeral Chapel, Bassett. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bassett Rescue Squad.

COX, Ila Beatrice Altizer, 81, of Floyd County, passed away Sunday, September 1, 1996, in in Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. She was born on November 8, 1914 and was the daughter of the late Frank Taylor Altizer and Flora Isabelle Dulaney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Berman Lee Cox and several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Cox is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Wilkie and Bonnie Cox of Christiansburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Jabe Hollandsworth of Christiansburg and Bonnie and Harlan Wade of Roanoke; three grandsons, Gregory Scott Hollandsworth of Christiansburg, Michael Kevin Wade of Roanoke, Alan Jeffrey Wade of Andrews AFB, Md.; five granddaughters, Anita Cox, Jessica Cox, and Kim Allen all of Christiansburg, Kathy Cox of Roanoke, Lisa Sheppard of Richmond; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Archie Altizer of Radford and Frank Altizer Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one sister, Edith Williams of Del. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 1996, at White Rock Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Kenny Wurzburger and Elder Willard Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Cox Cemetery. Mayberry Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

McCARTHY Anna Langhorne, of 331 Old Trent's Ferry Road, Lynchburg, died Monday, September 2, 1996 at Westminster Canterbury. She was the daughter of the late State Senator Richard Hewitt Langhorne and Sarah Kabler and the wife of the late Charles H. McCarthy of Lynchburg. A graduate of New London Academy and Randolph Macon Woman's College, she taught for 26 years in schools in Maryland and Virginia, most recently at Linkhorne Middle School. She is survived by three sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard L. McCarthy and Virginia Scott McCarthy of Lynchburg, William H. McCarthy and Mary Elizabeth Smith McCarthy of Lynchburg and David C. McCarthy and Deborah Koss McCarthy of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Sally McCarthy Kuisel and Dr. Richard Kuisel of Stony Brook, N.Y. and Kathleen McCarthy Downs and Charles Downs II of Glenelg, Md.; a brother, and sister-in-law, S. Kemp Langhorne and Loretta Langhorne of Christiansburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Hill Langhorne Colhoun and the Rev. E. Dudley Colhoun, Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C; and five grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church on Walnut Hollow Road. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 1996, at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg by the Rev. C. Lloyd Lipscomb, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Good Shepherd Society, C/O William A. Davis, Treasurer, 1616 Wigginton Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24501. PARKER, Amos, 90, of Salem, passed away Sunday, September 1, 1996. He was a retired coal miner. Survivors include his devoted wife of 68 years, Mrs. Cornelia DeBerry Parker; three daughters, Mrs. Bernice Lewis, Mrs. Wincey Parker Reca rd and Mrs. Norma Jean Sample, all of Salem; four grandsons, William (Billy) Sample, Washington Township, N.J., Thomas Sample, Steve Sample, both of Salem, and Anthony (Tony) Sample, Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Nikki, Ian and Travis Sample, all of Washington Township, N. J. and Ryan Sample, Roanoke; one god child, Princess Patterson Salem; sister-in-law, Mrs. Valley parker, Greensboro, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, with the Rev. Thomas Penn officiating. Burial in Williams Memorial Park. REID, Frances Carrie Scruggs, 80, a resident of Shenandoah Manor Nursing Home, Clifton Forge, and formerly of Waynesboro, died Sunday afternoon, September 1, 1996 at the Alleghany Regional Hospital in Lowmoor. She was born April 2, 1916 in Waynesboro, the daughter of James and Fannie Beard Scruggs. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Bertrand R. (Nancy) Seay of Covington; two sons, John S. Reid, Jr. of Salem and Harry W. Reid of Covington; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 1996 at the chapel of McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro, by the Rev. Lynn Connette. Interment will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 1996

TYLER, Raymond Gill, 84, passed away Sunday, September 1, 1996. He was a retired employee of the Norfolk and Western Railway. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae Tyler on April 2, 1996. Surviving are three sisters, Mary Louise Kish of North Caldwell, N.J., Kathleen Miller of Imperial, Penn., Evelyn Jamison of Shippensburg, Penn. Also, a sister-in-law, Mellie Filson Maben; and special friends, Elizabeth Stover Adkins and Nyle E. Filson.
