DUKES UPEND TECH IN SOCCER

James Madison's Jake Edwards scored two goals on three shots as the Dukes downed Virginia Tech 3-1 in a men's soccer game at Harrisonburg on Monday.

Edwards broke a 1-1 tie with his first goal off a pass from teammate Jari Takatolo at the 54:02 mark. He scored an insurance goal for James Madison (1-0) four minutes later.

Brian McFarlane scored the lone goal for Virginia Tech (1-2) off an assist from sophomore Zach Kovolenko.

In other sports news in the region:

Senior forward Meredith Arnott scored three goals as Roanoke routed Guilford 6-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer opener in Salem. Lisa Franzino and Laura Pecorale each had one goal and two assists for the Maroons.

Amy Stipandic has joined the staff of the Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team as a graduate assistant. Stipandic is a former lacrosse and field hockey standout for Tech coach Dipi Bhaya at Drexel University.

The University of Virginia had 241 student-athletes named to the 1995-96 Atlantic Coast Conference honor roll. It was the most student-athletes Virginia has had so honored. Duke had the most athletes on the honor roll with 276.
