FLOYD COUNTY STILL TOO MUCH FOR NORTHSIDE

In a battle of Timesland powers, Group A Floyd County used a big fourth quarter to defeat Group AA Northside 63-51 on Tuesday in Floyd.

Julie Sowers, who had 17 points, started the final quarter with back-to-back 3-point plays. That started Floyd County on a 24-12 surge as the unbeaten Buffaloes snapped a tie to gain their fourth victory.

The Buffaloes hit 18 of 26 free throws and made nine of 10 in the final quarter with Sowers hitting four in a row. Jill Quesenberry, who had 11 points, led the defense with six steals including three in the final quarter.

Sara Conner scored a game-high 21 points to lead Floyd's offensive parade.

Crystal Barrett, a 6-foot center, scored 20 points for Northside (2-1), but got no double-figure support. The Vikings made 11 of 14 free throws.

In other games:

Fort Chiswell 65, Radford 60: The Pioneers evened their record at 1-1 and handed the Bobcats their first loss with a balanced attack in Max Meadows.

Amy Coleman led the way with 14 points and Kelly Reynolds had 13 for Fort Chiswell. Radford (3-1) was led by Charlee Taylor with a game-high 33 points.

Covington 57, Buffalo Gap 33: The Cougars' press created a plethora of turnovers, many of which wound up as Joann Helton layups, in a victory over the Bison in Covington.

Helton led Covington (3-0) with 26 points and teammate Melissa Page scored 14.

Carey Surface led Buffalo Gap (1-2) with 18 in a game marked by more than 40 fouls.

Narrows 55, Giles 44: Bud Lucas scored 10 of her 16 points in the second and third quarters as the Green Wave, which spotted the Spartans an early 12-point lead, roared back for a non-district victory in Narrows.

The Green Wave (1-1) fell behind 16-4 after one period before outscoring Giles 35-18 in the middle two quarters. Suzanne Webb scored 13 points, hitting five of seven free throws down the stretch to put away the game for Narrows.

Kristen White led the Spartans (0-2) with 14 points.

Marion 62, George Wythe 45: Leigh Jones scored 22 points and Amanda Hall added 21 as the Scarlet Hurricane clobbered the Maroons in a non-district game in Wytheville.

Hall scored 11 points in the first half in leading Marion (3-0) to a 34-12 lead.

Megan Johnson led George Wythe (1-2) with 17 points.

Rural Retreat 67, Grayson County 49: The Indians grabbed their second victory in a non-district game as Kristie Osborne scored 19 and Jane Grubb added 13 in Independence.

Grayson County (0-4) was led by Lindsey Carico with a game-high 24 points.

William Byrd 52, Staunton River 41: Brandy Allen had 17 points and nine rebounds as the Terriers pounded the ball inside to win a non-district game in Vinton.

Stephanie Parnell scored 14 for William Byrd (2-1).

Erin Wolfe led Staunton River with 10 points.

Galax 55, Auburn 45: The Maroon Tide sped up in the first quarter with the fast break and slowed the Eagles in the third with its pressing defense to earn a victory in Galax.

Keisha Ayers and Erin Kyle each had 16 points to lead the Maroon Tide (2-0) in a non-district matchup. Catherine Cockerham added 11.

Deanna Dickenson led Auburn (2-2) with 10 points.

Blacksburg 77, Graham 32: The Indians evened their record at 2-2 in a non-district game, beating Graham as Sarah Hobeika scored 15 points and Andrea Feret added 13 in Blacksburg.

Salem 58, Laurel Park 40: The Spartans cruised to their second victory as Sara Palmer scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in Salem. Erin Collins led the defense with six steals.

Laurel Park (0-2) was paced by Isis Paddyfote with 12 points.

Shawsville 71, James River 42: Sarah Hagood scored 26 points and Megan Forster added 20 as the Shawnees rolled to a non-district victory over the Knights in Buchanan

Forster scored 12 points in the first half as Shawsville (2-0) rolled to a 34-13 advantage. Beth Burdette added 13 points.

James River (1-2) was led by Amy Sprinkle with 14 points and Nakia Burrell with 12.

Highland 39, Craig County 25: The Rams (1-2) won a non-district contest between the two Pioneer District rivals as Tammy Shifflett scored 21 to lead the way.

The Rockets (0-3) were paced by Jodi Harden with 10.
