A man who led as many as 20 police cars on a high-speed Labor Day chase across the lower Eastern Shore was caught Tuesday, state police said.
Marcus Wayne Greene, 22, of Ocala, Fla., was arrested a few miles from a swampy area into which he disappeared on foot after the chase Monday, said Mike McKelvin, a state police spokesman.
McKelvin said Greene was arrested after a trooper saw him walking on a bridge.
Greene is charged with assault with intent to murder, car theft and traffic violations.
The chase began early Monday after the driver failed to pay the toll at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and fled north on U.S. 13 with Virginia State Police in pursuit.
Maryland State Police picked up the chase when the car crossed the state line.
The driver squeezed through a roadblock, knocking the mirrors off the cars.
The chase continued with more than 20 police cars in pursuit before the suspect stopped the car and ran into a swampy area.
The chase was one of two in eastern Virginia on Labor Day weekend.
Another driver faces several felony counts after shooting at a police car in Newport News and hijacking several vehicles, police said.
Jackie Jermaine Bartlett, 23, of Newport News, was arrested Sunday night after being chased on foot through the Kingsmill area of James City County, said police Maj. Dave Daigneault.
The incident began at 5:20 p.m. in Newport News when Bartlett was stopped for speeding and reckless driving. Ten minutes later, a car fitting the same description drove past another police car, and the driver fired at the cruiser.
The shot hit the driver's door but the officer was not hurt. The officer chased the vehicle, which struck three other cars in two separate crashes during the chase.
The driver fled on foot, firing at officers as he ran. He was captured after trying to hijack another car.
