BLEVINS, Veltie III, (Val), 25, of Vinton, died Tuesday, September 3, 1996 in Charlotte, N.C. He was the oldest of five children. He graduated in the Class of 1990 from William B yrd High School. After high school, he attended Virginia Western and transferred to Radford University. He graduated from Radford University on December 10, 1995 with a Bachelor's Degree in Finance. He moved to Charlotte, N.C. to pursue job opportunities. Val will be dearly missed by his father, Veltie Blevins, Jr.; mother, Donna E. Blevins; brothers, Chris Blevins of Charlotte, N.C., Charles and Keith Blevins; and sister, Shelley Blevins, all of Vinton; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted from St. Andrew's Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Monday, September 9, 1996, with the Rev. Randy Rule officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. BOWERS, Dorothy Jewell, 90, of Glen Burnie, Md., formerly of Roanoke, Wednesday, September 4, 1996. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert E. Bowers. She is the beloved sister of Gladys J. Hollister; dear sister-in-law of Alma Jewell; she is also survived by six nieces, and five nephews. Funeral services will be held at graveside at Fairview Cemetery, Roanoke on Friday at 12 noon.
BOWYER, Chlora Keith, (``Chloe''), 70, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, September 3, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Har old ``Happy'' Bowyer. Mrs. Bowyer was a very devoted member of the Glade Baptist Church for approximately 25 years. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda Bowyer, Blacksburg, and Wanda and Terry Morehead, McCoy; a grandson, Keith Morehead, McCoy; two sisters, Iris Boyd, Meadows of Dan, and Mrs. Lloyd (Peggy) Belcher, Martinsville; four brothers, McCoy Keith, Vian, Okla., Wayne Keith, Byron, Ga., Larry Keith, Warner Robbins, Ga., and Gene Keith, Stuart; and numerous nieces, nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. DAVIS, Kenneth Taylor, 65, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Tuesday, September 3, 1996 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio on January 14, 1931 a son of the late Raymond Louis Davis and Mildred Evelyn Onions Davis. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela Rae Davis. Mr. Davis was a Navy veteran serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the board of directors of the Smith Mountain Lake Association and member of the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Dolly Davis; daughter, Sheryl Sue Allmon, Florissant, Mo.; son, Keith Alan Davis, Wrightstown, Penn.; daughter, Lori Ann Peevy, Springfield; daughter, Susan Gwen Tourje'e, Flemington, N.J.; son, Gary Michael Davis, Wrightstown, Penn.; son, Brian John Davis, Smith Mountain Lake; three brothers, Frank Davis, Huntington Beach, Calif., Donald Davis and James Davis of Hubbard, Ohio; 14 grandchildren. FOLEY, Nellie Irene Dishon, 84, of Roanoke passed away Tuesday, September 3, 1996. She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was always there for her family. HAWKINS, James Blair, 94, of the 1600 block of Bolling Ave., Norfolk, died Wednesday, September 4, 1996, in Norfolk. Mr. Hawkins was born in Clifton Forge, Va. He was the widower of Marjorie Frame Hawkins. He was a graduate of the 1925 Class of Virginia Polytechnical Institute. He was a retired Vice President of the Eastern Division of Virginia Power Co. Mr. Hawkins was a member and past board member of First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. He was a member of Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Norfolk Sports Club and the Norfolk Kiwanis Club. He was very active in the United Way of Tidewater, Childrens Hospital of the King's Daughters, the Norfolk General and the Leigh Memorial Hospitals. Survivors include a son, William Frame Hawkins and his wife, Susan, of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Susan Blair Hawkins and Anne Stuart Hawkins, both of Roanoke; a nephew, Robert Preston Hawkins, III of Hilton Head, S.C.; and a niece, Ruth Hawkins Maloney of Waynesboro. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, September 6, 1996, at the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk by Dr. J. Shepherd Russell. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 1996, at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. William Moore in Clifton Forge. HICKMAN, Evangelist Rose Lee Ferrell, of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, September 2, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. According to her employer, ``Rosa was a faithful and dedicated employee of Dunkin' Donuts on Franklin Rd. Rosa was a very special person who loved people. She constantly went out of her way to help her fellow co-workers and customers. She had hundreds of friends and management was constantly receiving compliments for her excellent service. Rosa was a type of person who can not be replaced. She will be sorely missed by everyone."" She is survived by her husband, Woodrow C. HOWELL, Edward Vaughan, 32, of Arlington, died Tuesday, September 3, 1996 at his home. Born March 21, 1964 in Charlottesville, he was a son of Ambassador W. Nathaniel Howell and Margie Saunders Howell of Charlottesville. Edward accompanied his family through many countries during their years with the U.S. Foreign Service. Edward participated in the evacuation of Egypt in 1967, the evacuation of Lebanon in 1975, lived in the United Arab Emirates, Greece, Algeria and several other posts during his life. A graduate of the University of Virginia in 1988 with a B.A. in History, Edward continued the tradition of government service as a security officer with the Central Intelligence Agency. He celebrated his heritage through his membership in the Sons of the Confederacy. In addition to his parents, survivors include his brother, W. N. ``Chip"" Howell III and his wife, Renee and child, Alex all of Pasedena, Md.; his paternal grandmother, Josephine Edwards Howell of Portsmouth; maternal grandmother, Roberta Burroughs Saunders, Bedford Co.; many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and colleagues who will cherish his memory. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Holly Memorial Gardens with Dr. N. Keith Smith officiating. JOHNSON, Patricia Miller Givens, 64, died at her residence in Blacksburg on Tuesday, September 3, 1996. She had been in failing health for some time. Mrs. Johnson was born on March 9, 1932 in Newport, and was a daughter of the late Hugh Peck and Lula Porterfield Givens. Patsy, as she was better known, was a noted local historian, having left a legacy of some 15 written works on the history of the New River Valley which she loved so well. She was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Texas, and a Masters from William & Mary at Williamsburg. She was a member of the Colonel William Christian Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Dr. Harvey Black Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Since her marriage, she had been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was actively engaged in various functions and activities with it. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Walter Lowell Johnson of Blacksburg; her son and daughter-in-law, Walter Peck Johnson and Diane; three grandchildren, Kara, Lindsay and Sean, all of Santa Maria, Calif.; one brother, Hugh Peck Givens Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Greenville, S.C.; three nieces and one nephew, Lisa, Becky, Ann and Ben; and numerous cousins in Giles and Craig Counties. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, September 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Blacksburg Ward at 700 Porter St., at 11 a.m. with Bishop Dean Stauffer officiating, with burial following in the Price Cemetery on the Johnson property. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Blacksburg. KINGERY, Allan, 62, of Lorton, died Saturday, August 17, 1996, at Alexandria Hospital. He was a resident of Roanoke for 32 years and of Lorton for 30 years. McCUNE, Mabel Eunice, 89, of Roanoke, formerly of Millboro, died Wednesday, September 4, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. McCune and was a member of the Roanoke Valley Baptist Temple, a life-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion #240 of Troutville and acting president of the Senior Citizens of Cloverdale. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas I. and Louise McCune of Troutville, James E. and Wilma McCune of Waveland, Mississippi; seven daughters and five sons-in-law, Elizabeth M. and Ira Bennett, Mobile, Alabama, Evelyn and Warren St.Clair, Roanoke, Hilda Brown, Huntsville, Alabama, Nina and Jerry Britts, Roanoke, Diana and Willis Behrens, Port Lavaca, Texas, Patricia and David Firestone, Troutville and Charolotte Walton, Roanoke; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. She is survived by a devoted niece and nephew, Ruby and Samuel Terry of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Lissie Young of Roanoke, who was very devoted, and Jean Meadows of Charlotte, N.C.; three devoted friends, Ida Morton, Shirley Law and Josephine Hutcheson of Roanoke; a host of other nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends, and the Price Memorial A.M.E. RICKLY, Opal Cox, 83, of Bedford, died Saturday, August 31, 1996, in a Roanoke nursing home. She w as born in Milton Center, Ohio on May 3, 1913, a daughter of the late Emanuel L. Rickly and Gertrude Longbrake Rickly. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Eldon Eugene Cox; and her second husband, Marion Leroy Rickly. She was a retired elementary school teacher, and was a member of World Wide Church of God. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Walter E. and Virginia Cox, Bedford; two grandchildren, Leonard Cox, Bedford, Deanna Cox, Draper; a sister, Bernice K. Mason, Alma, Wis. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, September 7, 1996, at 3 p.m. at Bedford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joseph S. Gaston and Rev. Francis B. Avery Jr. officiating. SIMPSON, Ruby Wilson, 80, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, September 3, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie L. Wilson and Etta Brown Wilson; two brothers, Hugh H. Wilson and Charlie L. Wilson Jr. S he is survived by her husband of 59 years, Morgan L. Simpson; one sister, Mary Richardson of Roanoke; three brothers, William Morton Wilson, Kansas City, Mo., Jesse Tate Wilson and wife, Gladys, George Hooker Wilson and wife, Rita, all of Roanoke. Also surviving are six nephews and two nieces; three great-nephews and four great-nieces. She was a lifetime member of Belmont Christian Church, where she was financial treasurer for a number of years. Funeral services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 1 p.m. Friday, September 6, 1996, with Rev. Michael Barnes officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel, where the family will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
SNIDER, Ella Frances, 51, of Roanoke, passed away, Monday September 2, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Snider. She is survived by a daughter, Laura Thompson, a son, Rodney Sink, Granddaughter Angel Sink, mother, Helen Farris, stepfather, Herbert Farris, half-brothers, Dennis Farris, Jerry Farris, and Jeffrey Farris, half-sisters, Terri Gibson, Bonnie King. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, September 6, 1996 at Oakey's North Chap el with Rev. Troy Webb officiating. ST. CLAIR, Kenneth Owen, (``K. O.''), 61, of Vinton, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 3, 1996. He was born September 26, 1934, the son of the late Vernon R. and Christine Brown St. Clair. Because of his dedicated service of 41 years at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Roanoke, Kenneth was known by many as ""Mr. Coca-Cola''. During that time he worked as Route Salesman, Sales Supervisor, Sales Manager, Operations Manager, Vice President and Manager, Central Division Manager, Director of Operations, Regional Sales Manager, and his current position, Manager of Retail Space. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. His devotion as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, employee and friend earned him a rare respect. His life was a testament of love and kindness and serves as an inspiration for all who knew him. Kenneth was preceded in death by a brother, Aubrey K. St. Clair. Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Joan Dingledine St. Clair; and son, Kenneth Neal St. Clair; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Alton R. and Pat St. Clair of Vinton, Artie M. St. Clair of Newport News, and Marshall O. and Joyce St. Clair of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janie S. and Dick Chewning of Vinton and Annie S. and Bobby Pollard of Blue Ridge; his mother-in-law, Edith M. Dingledine of Vinton; four sisters-in-law and husbands, Patricia D. and John Whitmore of Cape Coral, Fla., Jean D. and Gene Truman of Hardy, Sue D. and Billy Burks of Vinton, and Brenda Gale D. and Randall Miller of Anandale; two brothers-in-law and wives, Karl M. and Frances Dingledine of Petersburg and Charles M. and Patsy Dingledine of Vinton; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6, at Vinton Baptist Church at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Donnie Glass officiating, with burial in Mt. View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Vinton, Stewartsville, Chamblissburg or Hardy Rescue Squads, the American Cancer Society, Southside Baptist Church, or Vinton Baptist Church. VISKUP, John, 70, of College Point, N.Y., died Sunday, September 1, 1996. Surviving are his wife, Katherine E. Mr. Viskup was preceded in death by his wives, Lillian and Juanita. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at the Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Fiedler and the Rev. Dusty Fiedler. WILLIAMS, Louise McNew, 81, of 304 Valley St., Pulaski, died Wednesday morning, September 4, 1996 in Stuart Ci rcle Hospital, Richmond. Born January 17, 1915 in Pochontas. She was the daughter of late Amanda Payne McNew and Charles Edward McNew. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Pulaski. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Kyle Williams Sr.; a brother, Carl E. McNew and a sister, Pearl McNew Hill. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James (Frances) W. Walker, Richmond; two sons, E.K. Williams Jr., Round Hill, Charles Edward Williams, Bowie, Md.; one sister, Sharlene McNew Mattingly, Indian Head, Md.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Steven Emory officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.
