ALLEN, Guy C., Jr., 61, of Glasgow, died Thursday, September 5, 1996 at his home. Mr. Allen was born July 21, 1935 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Guy C. Allen, Sr. and Evelyn Bowling Allen. He was retired from Virginia Power after 31 years service. Surviving are his wife, Betty Painter Allen; one daughter, Deborah B. Beard, Culpepper; one sister, Patricia Amro, Manassas; two grandchildren, Kimberl y Beard, Culpepper, Christopher Beard, Centrville. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 1996, at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. William M. Thomas officiating. ANDERSON, Anna Jean Smith, 68, of Cu lbert Drive, Marion, died Wednesday, September 4, 1996, at her residence. Mrs. Anderson was a native of Russell County. She had been living in Smyth County for many years. She was a graduate of Radford College, where she received a Bachelors Degree in Education. She retired from the Smyth County School System as a teacher. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion, and was also a member of the Holston Hills Country Club, Wilderness Road Garden Club, and was a volunteer with the Smyth County Community Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include two sisters, Nancy S. Breeding, Roanoke, Shirley S. Campbell, Bristol; three brothers, Roy R. Smith, Lebanon, Lowell N. Smith, Lebanon, Jack D. Smith, Woodgate, N.Y.; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday from the First United Methodist Church, Marion, with Dr. J. N. Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home. BALARZS, Bela, (``Bill""), 77, of 120 Midway Street, Narrows, entered into eternal sleep Tuesday, September 3, 1996. He was born on October 18, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, and was the son of the late Sigmond and Barbara Bodner Balarzs. He was baptized in the ``First Hungarian Reformed Church"" on East Boulevard, Cleveland, Ohio. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 422nd Army Air Force Base Unit in North Africa and Italy. He was a member of the American Legion Post #68 and the V.F.W. Post #6000, both of Narrows, and was a self-employed businessman. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Lois Pruett Balarzs of Narrows; two sons, A. Brion Balarzs, Blacksburg, William S. (Billy) Balarzs, Narrows; a stepson, Paul D. Carper, Richmond; a brother, Fred Balarzs, Midlothian; two sisters, Barbara Evans, Chester, and Gizella Fazekas, Hudson, Ohio; two stepgrandchildren; and other beloved relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Rev. Jesse Kearns officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #68 on Narrows. The family will gather with their friends at Riffe's in Narrows, Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

BOWYER, Chlora Keith, (``Chloe""), 70, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, September 3, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6, 1996, at 11 a.m. at Glade Baptist Church, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Kelly Sisson officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. BRIGGS, A. Leon, 75, of Roanoke County, died Wednesday evening, September 4, 1996, at his home. He was a graduate of both Jefferson High School and the University of Virginia. Mr. Briggs was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corp, a member of the Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge, the Shrine First Aid Unit, and a life member and captain of the Roanoke Life Saving Crew. He retired from Patrick Henry High School where he was a former teacher and wrestling coach. Mr. Briggs was also a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Isabel Riley Briggs; son, Albert L. (Chip) Briggs Jr., MD; daughter-in-law, Diane S. Briggs; three grandchildren, Molly Elizabeth Briggs, Kevin Riley Briggs, Corey Allen Briggs, all of Roanoke; brother, L. Fred Bruney, Northern Va.; sister, Mary Frances Bruney Richardson, Memphis, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Rick Elmore officiating. BUHROW, Helen Miller, 84, of Blacksburg, was reunited with God when she passed away unexpectedly from a stroke on Tuesday, September 3, 1996. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Herbert W. Buhrow, their adoring children and their families, Bruce and Carole Buhrow, Beverly B. and Robert Dombrow ski and their three sons, Michael, James, and Andrew; and her sister, Ruth Gardner and her family. The family's grief is tempered by their joy for her soul's repose in Heaven. There will be no funeral arrangements. At her request, her body has been donated to science. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 1996, at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church or to the Special Olympics

COFER, Nannie Cornelia Preston, 65, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, September 5, 1996. She was born in Irving to the late Richard and Mary Turner Pr eston. She was employed by Roanoke City Public Schools and worked in the cafeteria at Highland Park before becoming ill in 1993. Mrs. Cofer was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Cofer Sr. Survivors include her children, Mary Ann Cofer, Miriam Cofer, Darlene Cofer, all of Roanoke, Charlene Cofer, Indiana, Jacob N. Cofer Jr. and Kenneth Cofer, both of Roanoke; sisters, Ollie Rucker, Edith Hall, Betty Terry, and Mildred Preston, all of Roanoke; brothers, Richard (Nannie) Preston Jr., Roanoke, Charles (Gladys) Preston, Bedford, Earnest (Dollie Mae) Preston, Alphonsa (Doretha) Preston, and Milton Preston, all of Roanoke; also ten grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. DAVIS, Joseph Henry Sr., 1891 Ridge Rd., Raphine, died Wednesday, September 4, 1996, at his residence. He was born on November 24, 1924, in Essex County, a son of William Preston and Lillian Gertrude Fields Davis. Mr. Davis was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was owner and operator of Davis Auto Electric and was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church of Glen Allen, and the Steeles Tavern VFW Post 8279. His wife, Mrs. Hilda Rogers Davis, preceded him in death on August 19, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lillie Mae Davis West. Survivors include five sons, Joseph H. Davis Jr. and Michael W. Davis, Sr., both of Raphine, Donald R. Davis and Ronald L. Davis, both of Staunton, and John W. Davis of Greenville; four brothers, Edward Davis and Sidney Davis, both of Tappahannock, Walter Davis of Lewisetta, and Irving Davis of Suffolk; a sister, Peggy Dix of Tappahannock; seven grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Old Providence ARP Church Cemetery by the Rev. H. Max Bolin. Active pallbearers will be his five sons and grandson, Michael W. Davis Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Matthew Davis and William L. McComas. DEANS, Fred Hinton, 75, of Roanoke County, died Wednesday night, September 4, 1996, in a local hospital. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving on the U. S. S. Bunker Hill, attended William and Mary College and spent his working life in sales. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert E. Deans. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Beverly B. Deans; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah D. and George (Chip) Snead, Craig County; son and daughter-in-law, Linwood H. (Woody) and Suzanne Deans, Roanoke; grandchildren, Jenny and Kristie Deans. Also surviving are sisters, Hazel Richardson, Roanoke, Stella Wolfenden, Marion, and a special sister-in-law, Evelyn Deans, Richmond, also many loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 1:30 p.m. Saturday by Dr. Daniel E. Scott. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park. DILLARD, Willie N., 89, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, September 2, 1996. Funeral services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., at the Forest Level Baptist Church, Forest. Rev. FURROW, Geraldine E. Martin, 85, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Thursday, September 5, 1996. She was the widow of James S. Furrow. Surviving are two sons, James D. Furrow, Roanoke and Oscar W. Furrow, Denver Colorado; eight daughters, Exie Underwood, Anna Bowman, Lillian Smith, Jacqueline Welch, Shirley Pandelis, Barbara James and Linda Garrett, all of Roanoke, and Dorothy Martin, Dallas, Texas; 41 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren. HARRISON, Nancy Carr, 98, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 3, 1996. She was born on May 12, 1898, the daughter of Holmes Conrad and Leta Bowen Harrison of LaCrosse, Va. Miss Harrison had resided at Our Lady of the Valley in Roanoke for the last year. She was a retired teacher with 45 years of service, 28 of them at the former Lee Junior High School. Miss Harrison was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church for many years, where she was a choir member. She was a member of the Rokevah Woman's Club. She was preceded in death by two brothers, George Thornton Harrison, Norfolk, and Holmes Conrad Harrison, Richmond; two sisters, Edith F. Harrison, LaCrosse, Evelyn H. Tucker, Chester; and half sisters, Amelia H. Palmer, Lawrenceville, and Rebecca H. Matthews, LaCrosse. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, Leta Tucker Hodge, Mexico, Mo., William J. Tucker, London, England, George T. Harrison, Annapolis, Md., Connie H. Woodruff, Charlottesville, Barbara H. Browder, Richmond, Holmes C. Harrison, Harrisonburg, Mary H. Johnson, Bon Air, Va., Katherine P. Neblett, Smithfield, Va.; special friends, Harold and Betty Gettle, Roanoke; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. LEONARD, Margaret Ethel, 91, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 5, 1996. She was a former employee of American Viscose Corporation and was a retired Dietician from Shenandoah Hospital. Miss Leonard was preceded in death by her parents, Charles T. and Sallie Turner Leonard, her sister, Beatrice Gusler, her brother, Hollie E. Leonard and is survived by her sisters, Ruby L. King, Edith L. Flora, bot h of Boones Mill, Clara L. Hatcher, Roanoke; also numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. MARTIN, James H., (""Jim""), 83 went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 4, 1996 at his home. He was born in Pilot, Va. on August 23, 1913. He was the son of Rice and Augusta Martin. He was a member of the Salem Baptist Church and was also active in the American Legion Post #3 and the VFW Post #1264. He served as a World War II Army Veteran serving in both the European and the Pacific Theatres. He also was an active member of the Salem Senior Citizens and several square dancing clubs. He had worked for many years at the Radford Army Arsenal as an Engineer and is survived by his wife of 56 years, Opal McClure Martin; daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Ronald Underwood, Janice and Don Powell, Karen and Gary Crawford; one son, Glenn Martin; 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Esta Loan, Stella Wolfe and Maude Curd; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 7, 1996 at 10 a.m. in the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel, Salem with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery in Pilot. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. MARTIN, Robert Eli Sr., 84, of Dublin, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 1996, at Woodhaven Nursing Home in Montvale. He was a retired fireman, having worked for Hercules for 36 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS Hornet during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mucie Peters Martin. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Brenda Lee and Henry Mosby of Montvale; granddaughter, Leigh Ann Mosby of Montvale; grandson, Robert E. Martin III of Roanoke. MEADOR, Frank Howard (``Dutch""), of Vinton and formerly of Blue Ridge passed away Wednesday, September 4, 1996. He is retired from the Roanoke City Water Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Wheeler Meador and a grandson, Sidney Flowers. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Irby Flowers, Vinton, Betty and Cla ude Williamson, Blue Ridge; also eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. MOORE, Mary, 93, of New River, died Wednesday, September 5, 1996 in a Radford hospital. She was the widow of John G. Moore. Surviving are a daughter, Minnie Ratcliffe of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Magretta Shelton, Radford; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 1996, at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Jerry Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. PENDLETON, Rollen Jack, 56, of Route 1, Thaxton, died Wednesday, September 4,1996, at his home. He was a Marine Corp veteran and a member of VFW Post 4522. PHILPOTT, Clara C., 76, of Martinsville, died Wednesday , September 4 1996. Mrs. Philpott was born in Kira, VA on May 4, 1920 to the late Joseph Cole and late Maude McPherson Cole. Mrs. Philpott is also preceded in death by her husband Paul Philpott she is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Liesge, of Colorado Springs, CO; 2 sons, Ben Philpott of Ridgeway, VA; and Myron of Drexel Hill, PA; 3 sisters, Mary McGough of Pomona, Ca, Ruth Berglund, of Frederick, Va; Harriet Vogel, of Landisville, Pa, She is also survived by one brother, Martin Cole of Lancaster, Pa, seven grand children and one great-grandchild. Born April 3, 1905 at Sandy Level, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Anna Cooke Davis. She was prece ded in death by her husband, Lauza Richie; brothers, Everett, Will, Morrison, and Len Davis; and sisters, Euna Coffey, Clella Leftwich, and Mary Cook. STUART, Thomas R., 78, of Elliston, died Wednesday, September 4, 1996 in Salem Veterans Hospital. He had retired in 1980 from Salem Frame as a Machine Operator. He was an Air Force World War II Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Jessie Lee Stuart; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Melita Stuart and Darrell and Kim Stuart; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Sherman Palmer, Nellie and Donnie Hatcher; grandchildren, Katrina Ferebee, Misty Hatcher, Chris, James and Reginal Stuart; great-grandson, William Holdren; one brother, Charles Ennis; sisters, Osie Brough, Iris Blankenship, Nellie Ratcliffe; and a host of friends and relatives. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 1996 at 1 p.m. in the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. David Hurd and Rev. Buford Linkous officiating. Burial will follow in Butts Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. WILLIAMS, Louise McNew, 81, of 304 Valley St., Pulaski, died Wednesday morning, September 4, 1996 in Stuart Circle Hospital, Richmond. Born January 17, 1915 in Pochontas. She was the daughter of late Amanda Payne McNew and Charles Edward McNew. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Pulaski. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Kyle Williams Sr.; a brother, Carl E. McNew and a sister, Pearl McNew Hill. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James (Frances) L Walker, Richmond; two sons, E.K. Williams Jr., Round Hill, Charles Edward Williams, Bowie, Md.; one sister, Charlene McNew Mattingly, Indian Head, Md.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Steven Emory officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be anytime Friday after 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home.

WITCHER, Maria F., 48, of Newark, N.J., died Tuesday, September 3, 1996 while visiting in Roanoke. Surviving are her husband, Thomas A. Witcher, Newark, N. J.; one daughter, Renae Witcher, Newark, N.J.; six sisters, Alice Freeman, Long Island, N. Y., Cathy Tomblin, and Dorothy Tomblin, both of Queens, N.
