NAMES & CHANGES

Hall Associates announces changes

STUART MEREDITH has been promoted to vice president of Hall Associates Inc., a Roanoke real estate company. In his new position, he will assist the president in running the company and continue to coordinate leasing of commercial properties. He has been with the company for 11 years.

ANGELA MAHALA has been promoted to director of accounting and financial management for all divisions of the company. She has been with Hall for eight years in the accounting division.

ANGIE THOMAS has been named manager of the commercial property management division. Thomas, who has more than eight years of management experience, worked with an advertising agency and a national property management company before joining Hall.

CINDY LAX has been appointed the company's lease administrator and office manager.

ACCOUNTING AND TAXES

DEBORAH L. HILL, assistant district manager of H&R Block's Eastern Tax Division, has been promoted to district manager of the company's Arlington District. Hill has been with H&R Block in the Roanoke Valley for more than 16 years. She is the coordinating trainer and instructor for the company's tax classes and is the Eastern Division regional instructor for assistant managers' classes and seminars.

BANKING

DIANNE WRIGHT has been appointed assistant vice president of First Virginia Bank-Southwest. Wright, who joined First Virginia in 1986, will be responsible for managing the bank's newly expanded Salem branch.

JAMES F. KEEGAN JR. has been promoted to senior portfolio manager and CAROLYN C. ALLEY has been named portfolio manager in First Union National Bank of Virginia's capital management group in Roanoke. Keegan has more than 18 years of experience in the investment industry, including investment research and money management. Alley joined First Union, formerly Dominion Trust Co., in 1971.

COLLEGES

BOBBY THOMPSON has been named vice president for business affairs and treasurer at Ferrum College. He previously was director of administrative services at the college. Thompson began working at Ferrum in 1979 as the college's business manager.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce has elected new directors for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1. They are ROBERT W. CLARK of Shenandoah Life Insurance Co., WILLIAM A. CORBITT JR. of Blue Stone Block Inc., H. CLARKE "DUKE" CURTIS of Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, DAVID C. LAWRENCE of Dale Carnegie Training, T. HOWARD NOEL of Hayes Seay Mattern & Mattern Inc. and LUCAS A. SNIPES of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

EQUIPMENT RENTAL

CRAIG A. SANFORD has been appointed Roanoke branch manager for Hertz Equipment Rental Corp. Sanford, who joined the company in 1994, previously was a sales representative in Hertz's Orlando, Fla., branch.

HEALTH CARE

KENNETH L. WADDELL, president and chief executive officer of Twin County Regional Healthcare Inc. in Galax, has retired after 40 years in the health care field in Southwestern Virginia. He is succeeded by MARCUS G. KUHN, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Twin County Regional Healthcare since 1989.

Waddell was one of the original incorporators of Twin County Community Hospital and had been its president and chief executive officer since it opened in 1973.

Kuhn, who has 22 years of experience in health care administration, held several administrative positions at the University of Virginia hospitals in Charlottesville before coming to Twin County Regional Healthcare.

RETAIL

GORDON L. KENDALL has been appointed manager of Lee & Edwards Wine Merchants in Roanoke. Gordon formerly was with Harris Teeter supermarkets. Also at Lee & Edwards, TERRY R. EASTMAN has been hired as a gourmet food and wine sales associate. He previously worked at Provisions Kitchen Gourmet.

JOHN FERMELIA has joined Hanover Direct Inc. as vice president and general manager of the company's home fashions distribution center in Roanoke. He previously was vice president of operations for Lillian Vernon Inc. Also, MICHAEL IPPOLITO has been named president of the company's Domestications division in Weehawken, N.J. He joins Hanover Direct from Popular Club Plan, where he was senior vice president of merchandising. HOWARD LEE has been appointed vice president of marketing at Domestications. He comes from Sur la Table, where he was chief operating officer.
