AKERS, Virgie K. Gwaltney, 92, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, September 12, 1996. She was the widow of Charlie Gwaltney and David Akers. Surviving are daughters and son-in-law, Virginia and Ernest Mohler, Virginia Beach, Marie Gwaltney, Roanoke; sons and daughters-in-law, James E. and Dorothy Gwa ltney, Chesapeake, George B. and Louise Akers, Mesa, Ariz., Billy N. and Phyllis Akers, Roanoke; several grandchildren including Deborah and Joe Williams, Donna and Bill Martin, all of Roanoke; several great-grandchildren; brother, Irvin King, Roanoke; sister, Inez Foster, Shawsville. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 11 a.m., Monday, September 16, 1996, with the Rev. Carter L. Sloan officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. ANDERSON, Horace Lee, 51, of Salem, passed away Monday, September 9 , 1996, in Salisbury, N.C. Horace married Lorraine Lovelace December 27, 1968. They reared two children, Tami Anderson and Ronnie Anderson. Survivors include one daughter, Tami Anderson; one son, Ronnie Anderson, both of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Kaniya, Stephon and India; two sisters, Delores and Gracie Darlene Anderson, both of Salem; three brothers, Robert Anderson, Newark, Del., Michael Anderson, Roanoke and Ronnie Anderson, Salem; cousins, Edward English (considered a brother) and Stella Price (considered a sister); many nieces, nephews, first cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and many good friends. Special recognition goes to his only surviving aunts, Martha Wiley, Salem and Nancy Woody, Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, with the Rev. BREWER, Virginia Evelyn, 63, of Roanoke, died on Wednesday, September 11, 1996. Mrs. Brewer was preceded in death by her husband, Walter F. Brewer. Survivors include fou r daughters, Tamara K. Brewer, all of Roanoke; five sisters, Lera (Sonny) Martin of Roanoke, Geneva (Roscoe) Price of Shawsville, Connie (Otis) Stewart of LaPlata, Md., Louise (Dotson) Burks of Chicago, Ill., and Anna (Frank) Jones of Greenwood, S.C.; one brother, Walter (Jerry) Price of Roanoke; one grandson, Na'sion Brewer of Roanoke, and a host of other relatives and friends. CARSON, R. D. Jr., CLU, 82, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 13, 1996. He was born November 16, 1913 to Dr. R. D. Carson and Julia Kyle Carson in Green Springs, Va, Mr. Carson grew up in Rogersville, Tenn., where his father was Pastor of the Rogersville Presbyterian Church. He attended McCallie School, was a graduate of Hampden Sydney College and served in the Army during World War II. R.D. Carson had a career in Life Insurance with the Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance Company for over 50 years and served as manager of the Roanoke agency from 1949 until his retirement. He was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and served as Elder and Trustee. Mr. Carson was very active in the community throughout his life and most recently involved on the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Roanoke Chapter of JDF. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Lyons Carson, Roanoke; son, Robert Dabney Carson III of Charlottesville, Va; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan Cobb Carson, Sara C. and Bruce Smith all of Winston Salem N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Lelia and Paul Watlington of Norfolk; sisters-in-law, Margaret Carson of Falling Springs, Eula Carson, Rogersville, Tenn. A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church 3 p.m. Sunday with the Revs. Robert and Dusty Fiedler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. GOCHENOUR, Margaret Harp, (``Peggy''), 68, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 12, 1996, while away on a bus trip to Wisconsin, Michigan and Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Margaret Harp. She was lifelon g member and Deacon of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. She worked for the Veterans Administration in Roanoke for a number of years. Surviving are her husband of 33 years, the Rev. Lloyd Gochenour, former Pastor of Peoples Baptist Church in Harrisonburg; a son, John L. Gochenour; a daughter, Cynthia (``Cindy"") D. Gochenour, and a sister, Lois Harp Carroll, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at Virginia Heights Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Monday, with Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. GOODWIN, Oscar Raymond, (``Red""), 80, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, September 12, 1996, at Virginia Veterans Care Center. He was a retired member of Local Union #491 of Plumbers and Steamfitters. He attended Penn Forest Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Hallie Goodwin, and an infant son, Raymond Allen Goodwin. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Pernie Rucker Goodwin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin and Barbara Goodwin, and F. Jerry and Mary Ellen Goodwin; one daughter and son-in-law, S. Lavonne and Jim Easterman; six grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; one brother and wife, Howard and Glenda Goodwin; one sister and husband, Caroline and Jim Evans, and one sister-in-law, Regina Goodwin. SHIVELY, Millard Thomas, 72, of Ferrum, went to be with the Lord Thursday, September 12, 1996. He was born March 29, 1924 the son of the late Mark and Lula Shively. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Thompson. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Marlene B. Cook, Dublin, Brenda and John Stanley, Rocky Mount; one granddaughter, Kimberly Boyd, Ferrum; four grandsons, Michael Cook, John, Brad and Scott Stanley; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred and Russell Scott, Rocky Mount, Geneva and James Hodges, Ferrum, Mary Sauers, Rocky Mount, Estelle and Buford Thompson, Ferrum, and Virginia and Leslie Hodges, Bassett; two brothers, Kermit Shively and Garvice Shively, both of Ferrum; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. YOUNG, Brenda Louise Sarver Starkey, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 12, 1996, at Le wis-Gale Hospital in Salem. She had previously been a resident of Dublin, but had resided at the Burrell Nursing Center in Roanoke for the past nine months. She was a member of the Fairlawn Church of God. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Renee Starkey. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Ray and Cindy Starkey, Pulaski; her parents, Douglas and Louise Sarver, Belspring; three brothers, Wayne D. Sarver, Rocky Mount, Edward Lee and his wife, Betty Sarver, Belspring, and Ronnie and his wife, Nobledean Sarver, Salisbury, N.C.; her fiance, Donny Hughes; two grandchildren, Michael Allen and Crystal Ann Starkey, Pulaski.
