A Pennsylvania woman was killed Monday afternoon in a two-car accident on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County.
The 39-year-old woman, whose identity state police withheld pending notification of her family, was southbound a half mile north of Virginia 608 when the accident occurred about 5 p.m., state Trooper R.F. Stout said.
Hong Liang Hu, 31, of State College, Pa., was northbound when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median, hitting the woman's car head-on, Stout said. Hu was charged with reckless driving.
Hu was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was in the emergency room in stable but serious condition Monday night, a nursing supervisor said. Hu's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, she said.
Both Hu and the victim appeared to be wearing their seat belts, Stout said. He would not comment on the woman's injuries, but said she was not ejected from the car.
The right southbound lane had to be closed for almost an hour, Stout said. State police were unable to give an estimate on how far traffic was backed up.
