BEARDMORE, Charles F., (``Fred""), 88, of Salem, passed away Monday, September 16, 1996. Surviving are his wife, Frankie L. Beardmore; three stepsons and their spouses, Ben and Helen Bryant, Salem, Ronnie Bryant, Salem, Earl and Remona Bryant, North Carolina; stepdaughter-in-law, Lovelle Bryant, Roanoke; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Salem Chapel, 10 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 1996, with the Rev. Ed Woodward officiating. Interment in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. BRITTON, Deacon Andrew Lewis, 89, of Nathalie, died Sunday, September 15, 1996, at Berry Hill Nursing Home in South Boston. He was the husband of Mrs. Viriginia Britton. He was born November 6, 1906, and was a son of Miss Rachel Britton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Armistead Britton and two children, Franlin R. Britton and Phyllis B. Moore. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Rachel B. Yuille of Roanoke, Mrs. Doris Tweedy of Lynchburg, and Mrs. Betty Kain of Lynchburg; one son, Mr. Andrew Britton of Dayton, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Poindexter of Nathalie; one stepson, Mr. Raymond Logan of Nathalie; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 19, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Brookneal, with Rev. L. S. Otey officiating. The cortege will assemble at the churc hat 1:40 p.m. The family will receive friends at Millstone Baptist Church on Wednesday, September 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and other times at the residence. KARNES, Walter E., 75, of Chamblissburg, died Monday, September 16, 1996 in a local hospital. He was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church and an Army Veteran of World War II. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Frances Conner Karnes; sons, Major Fred W. Kar nes and wife, Barbara, of Belton, Texas, Thomas A. Karnes and wife, Ellen, of Chamblissburg; daughter, Martha Jane and husband, Dan Mosse, of Chamblissburg; three grandsons; three granddaughters; three brothers, Riley Karnes, Melvin Karnes and Kyle Karnes, all of Chamblissburg. Funeral services will be conducted from Beaverdam Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 1996 with the Rev. Dennis E. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. McLAUGHLIN, Nancy Elizabeth Shepherd, 69, of Brownsburg and Washington, D.C., died Monday, September 16, 1996, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She was the wife of William Lowndes McLaughlin. Mrs. McLaughlin was born on August 27, 1927, in Hendersonville, N.C., a daughter of the late Marshall Monroe Shepherd Sr. and Julia Sherer Shepherd. She was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church, Brownsburg, and Georgetown Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C. Mrs. McLaughlin was a retired teacher and real estate agent. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter Shepherd McLaughlin and Carol Pala McLaughlin, Tucson, Ariz., David Wallace McLaughlin and Marilyn Gay Harman McLaughlin, Winchester; one brother, Marshall Monroe Shepherd Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.; three grandchildren, Lee Morgan McLaughlin and Thomas Marshall Shepherd McLaughlin, Tucson, Ariz., Mollie Shepherd McLaughlin, Winchester. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 1996, at New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Deborah H. Klein officiating. SIMPSON, Thomas William Jr., (``Tank''), 44, of Newbern, died Thursday, September 12, 1996, at his home after a long period of declining health. Born in Radford on February 5, 1952, he was a son of Thomas William Sr. and Gertrude Thomas Simpson of Belspring. He had been employed as a pattern maker at Bill's Pattern Services in Radford, and was preceded in death by his son, Brian C. Simpson. Surviving are his parents; his daughter, Sabrina Simpson of Pembroke; two sisters, Sandra Joseph and Jackie Sue Payne, both of Dublin; and a special aunt, Mary Jane Heldreth of Wytheville. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 19, 1996, at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, with burial in the Payne Family Cemetery in the Clendennin Community near Narrows.
