Tom McKnight of Galax shot his third straight even-par 71 Sunday and won his second State Mid-Amateur championship.
McKnight, who also won this event in 1985, finished five shots ahead of defending champion Keith Decker of Fieldale. Decker closed with a 70, one of three rounds below par on the third trip over the Augustine Golf Club in Stafford.
``It was kind of a strange day,'' said McKnight, who made birdies on the first two holes and barely missed two more on Nos.3 and 4. He also had a double-bogey on the 16th hole after hitting to an unplayable lie.
Decker's round included an eagle 2 on the 308-yard 15th hole, where he holed his shot from a bunker about 20 yards from the cup.
``I'm fairly pleased to finish the way I did,'' said Decker, who also birdied the final two holes. ``I'd like to start over, though.''
First-round leader Pat Tallent of Vienna, Jake Allison of Roanoke and 1992 state amateur champion Allen Barber of Yorktown shared third with 219s. Tallent and Allison shot 74s Sunday, and Barber had a 69.
Lexington's J.W. Entsminger fired a 74 to finish tied for seventh at 226.
