It's back. The scary creatures who work at The Roanoke Times are holding the second Halloween story and art contest. We received more than 500 entries last year from pupils all over the New River Valley. We are greedy creatures and expect to receive just as many, if not more, this year.
We will publish selected winning entries in The Current on Halloween, Oct. 31. We have several guidelines for entries. The most important rule is that stories and artwork must be original. That means you cannot use someone else's work - including a similar idea.
In addition, entries also should include the following:
Stories and art should have a Halloween theme.
They should contain no profanity.
Keep stories short, about 500 words.
Artwork should be not be on paper bigger than 8-by-11 inches.
Categories of entry are art and story at the elementary and middle school levels. Three winners will be selected from each category at each level. Students may submit entries to both art and story categories.
Please include your name, grade and school on your submission. Classroom submissions should include the teacher's name and phone number.
Stories need to be in our claws by midnight Oct. 16 to give us time to judge them.
