BECKLEY, Alfred , 69, of Roanoke, died Saturday, October 5,1996. He was hired by the City of Roanoke in 1950 as an Electrical Engineer and retired in 1992 as Manager of Communications for the City of Roanoke. He designed and implemented the 911 system that Roanoke now uses. He also designed the dispatching system for the City of Roanoke. He was an early member and past president of APCO. He was a longtime member of the Emergency Medical Services for the State of Virginia. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Lakeland Lodge and a charter member of Etta Chapter of the Eastern Star. He was currently serving on the Cox Cabel Committee for the City of Roanoke. He worked for many years as Chief Engineer for WROV Radio. He was a life-time member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a long standing member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from the University of Chicago. He is survived by his wife, Keturah Beckley; two daughters and son-in-law, Marie Beckley of Roanoke and Patricia B. and Dr. Robert B. Thompson of Fishersville, Va.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Marie Thompson, Mary Ann Thompson and Robert Beckley Thompson. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 8, 1996, at 12 noon at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Cato officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 7, 1996. BOWLES, James William, Sr., 75, of Salem, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was owner of Bowles Brothers Paving Company. He was Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a member of the 82nd Airborne and the Merrill Marauders. Mr. Bowles was born in Maybeury, W. Va. and is survived by his wife, Beatrice Mae Bowles; two sons, Jimmy Bowles, Jr. and Eddie Riley Bowles; two daughters, Debbie Honig and Jeanne Bowles; two sisters, Leona Feazell and Jenny Bowles; three sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; three grandsons, Phillip Honig, Jr., Brian Bowles and Zachary Bowles; one granddaughter, Marisa Bowles; two great-grandchildren, Casey Clinevell and Katie Cabert. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12 noon in the Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Atkins officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. BOWLES, Norris Carr, 83, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, October 6, 1996. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jasper Bowles; a half brother, Reeves (``Bubba"") Brown; a son, John P. (``Trig"") Bowles; a half sister, Rebecca Brown, and two stepchildren. Surviving are children, Marybelle Francisco and husband Robert, Ellen Craft and husband Marvin, Arlie Moorman, Harold Bowles, Wilber Bowles, David Bowles and wife Jackie, Earl Lee Bowles, and Michael Bowles and wife Joann, and stepchildren, Patricia Welty, Charles Arthur, Robert Wayne, Deborah, Sanford, Shirley June and Leyah. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 1996, at Lotz Vinton Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Phaup officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Burial Park. BURKE, Dorothy Barger, 96, of Salem, widow of Thomas Edwin Burke, passed away Sunday, October 6, 1996, at her home after a several year period of declining health. Mrs. Burke was born September 18, 1900, at Walnut Grove, Shawsville, and was the daughter of David Harvey Barger and Daisy Lindsay Caldwell Barger. She attended Salem Academy and Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was a longtime resident of Salem, a charter member of Lake Spring Garden Club and a member of Southern Cross Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was active in civic and charitable causes, and was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Ernestine B. Wade of Bluefield, W.Va., and Agnes B. Bray of Logan, W.Va.; two half sisters, Renna B. Moomaw and Ange B. Boykin of Elliston, and a half brother, Frederick W. Barger of Salem. She is survived by a sister, Helen B. Harvey of Kingsport, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Salem Presbyterian Church at a later date. John M. CASSELL, Carol Huntley Luck, 58, of Wytheville, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Louise Koontz Luck. She was a school teacher for the Wythe County and Prince William County Public Schools. She is survived by her husband, Charles M. Cassell of Wytheville; her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Cassell Hackler and Darrell Hackler of Fayetteville, N.C.; a grandson, Martin Hackler of Fayetteville, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. J. Thomas and Rosalie Luck of Damascus, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Lynda Luck Davis and Elmer Davis of Rocky Mount, Va.; beloved mother-in-law, Ida M. Cassell of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 7, 1996 at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John M. Hawn. CRONISE, Richard W., 43, of Botetourt County, went to be with the Lord Sunday, October 6, 1996. He attended East Gate Church of the Nazarene, was retired from Norfolk Southern, Shaffers Crossing, with 19 years service and was a member of the I.A. of M. Union, Local No. 165. He was preceded in death by his mother, Glenna Booth Cronise. Surviving are his wife, Mary Fry Cronise; daughter, Melissa Ann Cronise of Nashville, Tenn.; son and fiancee, Barry Lynn Cronise and Christie D. Maxfield; grandson, Joshua Lee Cronise, all of Roanoke; father and stepmother, Cyrus C. and Gladys M. Cronise of Roanoke; brother and sister-in-law, Calvin R. and Linda R. Cronise of Botetourt County; sister and brother-in-law, Alice M. and Mark A. Williams of Roanoke; brother-in-law and wife, Douglas P. and Nancy E. DeBUSK, Charles F., of Blacksburg, died at his residence with his family present, Sunday, October 6, 1996. Born April 14, 1913, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia; three sons, Charles, II, of Palmyra, Va., Mark of Blacksburg and Thomas of Virginia Beach; and five daughters, Carolyn Riggs of L.A. County, Calif., Mary Miller of Kansas City, Kansas, Priscilla Carpenter of Shikarpur, Pakistan, Nancy Larkins of Atlanta, Ga. and Rebecca Haydon of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandsons and six granddaughters. His family gratefully remembers his example of faith in God and service to others. He ministered for the Lord in many roles as a founding member of Harvest Baptist Church. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Mr. DeBusk served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He retired as the Assistant Director of the Virginia Tech Physical Plant in 1983. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given in memory of Mr. DeBusk to benefit the ministry of Shikarpur Christian Hospital in Pakistan, where his daughter, Priscilla, serves. FELTS, Debra Kay, 39, of 20002 Johnson Drive, Westwood Addition, Abingdon, died Saturday, October 5, 1996, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. She had lived in Abingdon since 1980 and was a member of Pleasant View United M ethodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Randy M. Felts; one daughter, Courtney Felts of the home; one son, Rayland Felts of the home; her mother, Mrs. Lola Lundy of Galax; two sisters, Teresa Cox of Galax and Donna Hodge of Lexington, N.C.; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Jones of Galax; two nephews, and several aunts and uncles. HAMPTON, James Robert, 96, of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 1996 in a local hospital. He was a native of Rhonda, North Carolina, where he worked for the Southern Railroad. After coming to Roanoke, he worked for the Norfolk & Western Railway for forty-three years, retiring in 1966. He was been an active and devoted member of Price Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church for sixty-five years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie, and two of their thirteen children, Violet Lee Hampton and Rose Mary Hampton. Survivors include eight daughters, Mrs. Frances Woods, Mrs. Millie (Harold) Jones, Mrs. Carrie (Bobby) Easley, Mrs. Doretha A. Robinson, Mrs. Mary R. (Rudolph) Dillard, Mrs. Cynthia L. (James) Clarke, all of Roanoke, Mrs. Bertha M. (Bobby) Miller, Fayetteville, N.C., Mrs. Betty J. King, Portsmouth, Va.; three sons, James (Ernestine) Hampton, Pasadena, CA., Albert L. HONAKER, Edith Galbreath, 82, of Draper, died Saturday evening, October 5, 1996 in Radford Community Hospital. Born May 22, 1914, she was the daughter of the late William Bartram Galbreath and Nellie Allison Galbreath. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Randolph Honaker. Mrs. Honaker was a school teacher in Pulaski County for 39 years. S he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William H. (Ruth) Hughes of Dublin; one granddaughter, Cheri Honaker of Draper; and one great-granddaughter, Kayla Lynn Wright of Draper. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from Thomas M. LOVE, Betty Price, 66, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, October 5, 1996, in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Love was a member of Pearisburg Presbyterian Church. She was a nursing supervisor at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, and had served as nursing manager in the office of the late Dr. D. F. Love. Betty was a devoted mother and friend to many. She was born at Hoges Chapel on March 20, 1930, and was a daughter of the late William Mason Price and Mattie White Price. She was the widow of Dr. D. F. Love. She is survived by two sons, Michael Smith, M.D., of Harrisonburg and John D. Love of Stanardsville; two daughters, Donna S. Patton of Vinton and Mary Anne Love Morgan of Summitt, N.J.; a sister, Faye P. Collins of Roanoke, and grandchildren, Eric and Laura Patton of Vinton, Cynthia L. Thierry of Stevensville, Md., Leah Korbel of Califon, N.J., Richard Love of Berkeley, Calif., Bryan Love of Grottoes and Sarah Love of Minneapolis, Minn. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on December 25, 1910, and was the daughter of the late James William and Ada Virginia Whittaker Vaughn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Grant Meadows; two sons, Billy Eugene Meadows and Harry Eugene Meadows; four sisters, Clarice Blankenship, Dollie Lucado, Nell Moran and Mabel Hare; three brothers, John Vaughn, Clarence Vaughn and Grover Vaughn; two grandsons, and a great-grandson. She was a member of North Narrows Tabernacle. She is survived by four sons, James H. and his wife Annabell Meadows, Charles E. Meadows, Eldon M. Meadows and David Whittaker of Narrows; three daughters, Peggy M. and her husband Charles W. MILLS, Richard N., 56, of Natural Bridge, died Saturday, October 5, 1996, in the Roanoke Memorial Cancer Center. Mr. Mills was born December 9, 1939, in Bluefield, Va., a son of Elah Morgan Mills of Fayetteville, N.C., and the late Woodrow W. Mills Sr. He attended High Bridge Presbyterian Church and was a very avid ``Redskins"" fan. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Kathy R. SHANKS, Oscar Douglas, 88, of Buena Vista, left this world to be with Jesus on Saturday, October 5, 1996. He died at the home he shared with his brother and sister-in-law, Freddie and Roberta Shanks. Mr. Shanks had been ill for a long time and he longed to go to his Heavenly home. He was a son of the late Alfred L. Shanks and Nannie Huffman Shanks and a life-long member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Lyda Paitsel Turnbull, who passed away September 6, 1996. He is survived by his daughter and special son-in-law, Diane and John Poston; a gra nddaughter, Vanessa Poston; a sister, Doris (``Jackie"") Murray, and brothers, L. G. Turnbull and Duvall Turnbull, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 1996, at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Orlando Gonzales officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
