NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JAMES W. COCKRELL, son of Christine Crain of Buchanan, recently completed a six-month deployment aboard the guided missile frigate USS Underwood. Cockrell served in the Persian Gulf, helping enforce U.N. sanctions against Iraq.

Cockrell, a 1990 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, is stationed in Mayport, Fla.

AIRMAN JASON A. ARTHUR and AIRMAN ANDREW R. VECCHIO recently completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Arthur, son of Linda and Barney Arthur of Vinton, is a 1993 graduate of William Byrd High School.

Vecchio is the son of Irene Malachowsky of Roanoke and Richard Vecchio of Hilton Head, S.C.

LEWIS E. WERTZ III, son of Army Lt. Col. Lewis and Sue Wertz of Roanoke, recently graduated from leadership training at the U.S. Army Cadet Command ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C.

Wertz, a 1993 graduate of Northside High School, is a student at University of Virginia.

PFC. MICHAEL C. DAVIS, son of Emanuel and Janet Davis of Buchanan, recently completed basic training with Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Davis is a 1992 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

PFC. BOBBY H. PERKINS and PVT. JOSHUA T. PERRINGTON recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Perkins, a 1989 graduate of William Fleming High School, is the son of Bobby Perkins Sr. of Roanoke.

Perrington, a 1995 graduate of William Byrd High School, is the son of Thomas and Debbie Sherman of Roanoke.

CPL. MARVIN P. WRIGHT, SGT. ROBERT W. SAUNDERS, LANCE CPL. JAMES J. BROUGHMAN AND LANCE CPL. BRUCE C. NEWMAN have recently returned to Camp Lejeune, N.C. after completing a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. The members of this unit assisted in the evacuation and protection of American citizens in Liberia and provided security for the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia.

Wright is the son of Marvin and Marcella Wright of New Castle; Saunders is the sone of Norma Saunders of Vinton; Broughman is the son of Charlie and Joann Broughman of Troutville; and Newman is the son of Melvin and Evelyn Newman of Salem.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS STEPHEN M. SPROUSE, son of W. M. Sprouse of Roanoke, participated in the recent missile attacks on Iraq while aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Laboon. The USS Laboon is stationed in the Persian Gulf to help enforce the U.N. sanctions against Iraq.

Sprouse is a 1986 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

AIRMAN NICHOLAS C. HORWATT, son of Lawrence and Linda Horwatt of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Horwatt is a 1995 graduate of William Fleming High School.

MARINE LANCE CPL. JOSEPH L. BROOKS, son of Doris Linkenhoker of Vinton, recently completed a two and one-half month overseas operation with the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force which provided security for American citizens and the American embassies in Liberia and the Central African Republic.

Brooks, a 1995 graduate of William Byrd High School, is stationed in Morehead City, N.C.

MARINE LANCE CPL. ANDREW T. MINTON, son of Ronald and Jennie Minton of Roanoke, recently received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service.

Minton, a 1993 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

ARMY PVT. DEAN C. BURKE, son of Charles and Pamela Burke of Salem, recently graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

NAVY AIRMAN JOSHUA Z. ESTRADA, son of David Estrada of Roanoke, recently participated in a military training exercise in Thailand aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa. The USS Tarawa is stationed in the Middle East where it transports the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

NAVY MIDSHIPMAN MICHAEL S. MCFADDEN, son of Michael and Joyce McFadden of Blue Ridge, was recently recognized for superior performance while serving with the Navy ROTC unit at Virginia Military Institute.

McFadden is a 1992 graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School.

DR. MATTHEW E. NEWTON, son of John P. and Virginia A. Newton of Roanoke, recently was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander.

Newton is a 1983 graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School. He is also a graduate of Virginia Tech and Ohio State University.

Newton is currently assigned to Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach.

AIR FORCE CAPT. RAYMOND W. MARSH, son of Raymond W. and Helen R. Marsh of Salem, recently received the Air Force Commendation Medal, his third award.

Marsh is a 1984 graduate of Salem High School and a 1988 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He is currently a construction chief at Osan Air Base, Songton, South Korea.

MARINE SGT. TREVOR S. DEMPSEY, son of Richard and Norma Dempsey of Roanoke, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in recognition of his superior performance while serving at Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan.

Dempsey is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JASON M. SHREWSBURY of Daleville recently participated in a military exercise in the Baltic region while serving with the 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group. This training exercise involving soldiers from the U.S., Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia taught peacekeeping and medical skills.

Shrewsbury is a 1992 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

LANCE CPL. JASON A. GREIMEL of Roanoke recently received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Greimel is a 1992 graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT AARON M. DEYERLE, son of Melvin and Wendy Deyerle of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Deyerle is a 1995 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
