COLLINS, Junior Franklin, 59, of Glade Spring, died Saturday, October 12, 1996, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was born in Smyth County and had lived in Glade Spring for 30 years. He was a member of Landmark Baptist Church, and was a former deputy sheriff in Washington County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Flora McGuire Collins; two sons, Dean Collins of Glade Spring and Allen Collins of Wilmington, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Susan Miller of Bristol, Va.; three brothers, Roger Collins of Glade Spring, Billy Collins of Kingston, Md., and Shirley Collins of Saltville; four sisters, Mrs. Esther Moore of Salem, Mrs. Louise Cannon and Mrs. Sandra Sullins of Glade Spring, and Mrs. Betty Flock of Gaithersburg, Md., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Farris Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Benny Bowman officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Rose Cemetery. FERGUSON, Lillian M., 88, of Roanoke and formerly of Hershberger Rd., passed away Friday, October 11, 1996. She was the widow of Thomas J. Ferguson; and is survived by her son, Dr. Jerry T. Ferguson, Richmond; a grandson, Preston R. Ferguson, Washington, D.C.; a brother, Glenn O. Wills, Roanoke; and a sister, Mrs. Beulah W. Chandler, Roanoke. FITZGERALD, Kathleen Akers, 82, of Roanoke, died Saturday, October 12, 1996. She was educated in Roanoke public schools and was a graduate of Martha Washington University. She received her Masters Degree from Virginia Tech. Mrs. Fitzgerald taught in High Schools in Roanoke, Shenandoah and Norfolk, Va and Old Dominion University. She was active in Garden Club work in both Norfolk and Roanoke. She was past President of Town & Country Garden Club in Roanoke. Surviving is her husband, Beverly Fitzgerald, sisters, Mrs. Paul (Virginia) Davidson of Roanoke; Mrs. Richard (Anne) Sprague Bangor, Maine; a brother, Robert G. Akers, II, North Augusta, S.C., niece Mrs. Ronald Hammitt also of, North Augusta , S.C., a nephew, Robert G. Akers III, of Atlanta; three great-nieces, four great-nephews. GARNAND, C. Ellsworth, 70, of Roanoke, died Saturday, October 12, 1996, in a Charlottesville hospital. He was a member of Belmont Christian Church, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, World War II, a retired law enforcement officer for the City of Roanoke, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lakeland Masonic Lodge #190 A.F. & A.M., Kazim Temple of Shrine, and Scottish Rite. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Lorena Burton Garnand; son and daughter-in-law, Clinton E. Jr. and Dione Garnand, Jacksonsville Beach, Fla.; mother-in-law, Madeline Burton, Roanoke; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Hank Kilby of Roanoke; brother-in-law, Harry S. and wife, Phyllis Goggin, Vinton; several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. GILBERT, Robert Rickey, ( ``Rick""), 51, of Salem, passed away at his home Friday, October 11, 1996. He was Director of Building Facilities for Lewis Gale Clinic. Rick was preceded in death by his father, Robert Shockley Gilbert. He is survived by his mother, Mary Louise Gilbert of Roanoke; wife, Gail Waldron Gilbert, sons, SK3 Robby B. Gilbert, Boston Mass; Brad R. Gilbert of Salem; R Keith Tinnell, Salem; sister-in-law, Jean Mays of Belton, Mo; sister and brother- in- law, Peggy and Sam Williamson of Hardy, brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Peggy Waldron of Hardy. Several special aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A close family friend Monique Lee and numerous friends and co-workers at Lewis-Gale Clinic. JONES, Mrs. Arlette Lavonne Price, (``Vonnie""), 40, of Pittsburgh, Penn., passed away Wednesday, October 9, 1996 at her home in the Wilkinsburg Borough of Pittsburg, Penn. She was the daughter of the late George Reginald (Shorty) Price and the late Rose Clarke Price Mason. She attended the elementary schools of Roanoke intermittingly as they travelled with their father while he was serving in the military forces. MABRY, William Franklin, 87, of Dublin, passed away Friday, October 1 1, 1996, in a Dublin nursing home. He was a retired steam fitter and was a member of the Radford Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Harless and Donald Mabry; one daughter, Barbara Croy. Survivors include his wife, Emma R. Mabry of Dublin; two sons and daughters-in-law, David Lee and Patty Mabry, William R. and Alvina Mabry, both of Radford; one sister, Dorothy Miles of Radford; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Rachel F. Mabry of Radford; son-in-law, Julian D. Croy of Radford. MODE, Daphne Myers, 93, of Radford, died Saturday, October 12, 1996, in a Radford hospital. She was the widow of James M. Mode Sr. She was a longtime member of the William Campbell Chapter of the DAR, serving for 10 years as chaplain. She also was chairman of the Flag Committee and the School Comm ittee of her DAR chapter. Mrs. Mode was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Women's Group. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James M. Jr. and Alzie B. Mode of Radford; a sister-in-law, Mrs. John K. Reed of Rutherfordton, N.C., and a brother-in-law, John Mode of Rutherfordton, N.C. She was the widow of Phleet Plummer and also was preceded in death by a son, Robert Plummer. She was born on April 26, 1915, at Mouth of Wilson, to William Luther Adams and Nora A. Barnes. UPDIKE, Wesley Kyle, of Bedford, 3-year-old son of Sheila Marie Updike of Roanoke and grandson of W. Calvin and Edley Rosazza Updike of Bedford, died Thursday, October 10, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital from injuries received when struck by a car. In addition to his mother and grandparents, he is survived by his twin sister, Kendall Nicole Updike, and his aunt, Denise Updike and her husband Jeff Freeland, all of Bedford, and many special relatives and friends. WADDELL, James Foley, 88, of Collinsville, died Thursday, October 10, 1996. Mr. Waddell was born in Pulaski County on July 5, 1908, to the late Abram F. Waddell and the late Molly Johnson Waddell. Mr. Waddell had retired from American Bridge Division of U. S. Steel after over 30 years of service. Mr. Waddell was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Martinsville. Mr. Waddell was preceded in death by his daughter, Mrs. Robert H. (Joan) Zolakar, and his brother, Edward Waddell. Mr. Waddell is survived by his wife, Helen Garman Waddell of Collinsville; two daughters, Mrs. Nelson (Martha) Reed of Collinsville and Mrs. Barbara Stewart of Radford, and one son, Jerry F. Waddell of Bradenton, Fla. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at Sunrise Cemetery in Radford. Officiating will be John W. Linkous.
