Fairfax County's top manager held onto his job after a four-hour closed-door meeting Monday to review his performance.
William J. Leidinger's job was on the line after two weeks of reports about financial blunders and possible contracting improprieties.
The county Board of Supervisors ordered Leidinger to respond to the results of a confidential job report card and return to face the board on Oct. 28. The 10-member board could vote then on whether to fire Leidinger.
Leidinger had no comment Monday after he left the board meeting. Leidinger spent about two hours behind closed doors with the board.
``We have given him time to respond and asked him to come back Oct. 28,'' said Penelope Gross, a board member and chair of the personnel committee.
Leidinger is paid $147,300 as county executive in Virginia's most populous and wealthiest county. He took the job in 1992.
Some board members said Leidinger could be fired after reports that he presided over ballooning costs for a consulting contract. Fairfax spent about $450,000 more than it needed to as a result.
