Workshop to focus on child's education

The Southwest Virginia Association for Early Childhood Education is sponsoring a "Planning for Success Starts Early" conference and luncheon Saturday at the Holiday Inn-Tanglewood 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Workshop topics will include improving communication skills and building children's self-esteem.

The keynote speaker is Donna Thornton, executive director of the National Association of Child Care Professionals.

This event, while aimed at child-care providers and preschool and kindergarten teachers, is open to the public. Registration is required and costs $22. To register, or for more information call, 981-7770.

Self-defense class for women offered

A six-week self-defense class for women is being offered by the Salvation Army. The class will meet on Wednesdays from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army Community Center, 724 Dale Ave. S.E., beginning next Wednesday. Richard Mann, a black belt, will be the instructor. The cost is $35.

Adoption fair has information

An adoption fair will be held Nov. 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Lewis-Gale Foundation, 3000 Keagy Road. Information on international and domestic adoptions will be provided. Adoption agency representatives and adoptive parents will be available to share information and experiences. For more information, call Terri Cornwell at 265-2604.

Alternative medicine fair to be held

A "Health and Healing" fair will be held the weekend of Oct. 26-27 at the Lifestream Center at 2028 Brandon Ave. S.W. Practitioners in alternative medicine and therapy will provide demonstrations and information on such topics as reflexology, homeopathy, tai chi, herbal remedies and astrology.

The fair will be open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. There will be an ongoing potluck for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tickets are $20 for both days, $15 for Saturday only or $10 for Sunday only. For more information, call 344-3031.

Free test seminars offered by Kaplan

Free seminars on graduate school admission tests will be offered by Kaplan in Blacksburg. The sessions will include study tips, practice questions and test-taking strategies for the GMAT today, GRE on Wednesday and MCAT on Oct. 30. To reserve your place or for more information, call 552-8378.
