W&L TURNS TURNOVERS INTO 24-21 VICTORY

Washington and Lee took advantage of five Sewanee fumbles to beat the Tigers 24-21 in a non-conference football game in Lexington.

The Generals (3-4) led 21-0 at halftime after converting three Sewanee fumbles into touchdowns.

W&L led 24-7 heading into the fourth quarter behind the passing of Brooks Fischer, who threw for 143 yards with one touchdown. Fischer, a senior, moved into second place on the school's all-time passing list. He has 4,314 yards in the air, second only to Phillip Sampson's 4,448 from 1986-89.

The Tigers (3-3) closed to 24-14 with 7:42 remaining in the game when Micah Elliott scored on a 5-yard run, capping a 16-play, 80-yard drive. The Generals fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Sewanee scored two plays later on an 18-yard run by Jeremy Whitman. The conversion kick made it 24-21 with 7:20 to play.

After a W&L punt with 4:10 left, the Tigers took possession. But they were stopped on a fourth-and-three play and the Generals ran out the clock.

In other games involving Virginia teams:

Methodist 24, Ferrum 17, OT: The Panthers wasted a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter as the Monarchs won in overtime in Fayetteville, N.C.

Tailback DeCarlos West scored on a 3-yard run with 7:25 left in the fourth quarter as Methodist (5-2) closed to 17-10. The Monarchs tied it with a conversion kick after Brian Turner threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Lanard Ballamy with 2:18 to play.

In overtime, Turher hit William Ray with a 6-yard touchdown pass.

Ferrum (1-6) took a 7-3 lead when tailback Maurice Clark scored on a 31-yard touchdown run with 13:15 to go in the second quarter. Gus Seyler-Schmidt's 34-yard field goal made it 10-3 one second before halftime.

The Panthers made it 17-3 when Keith Campbell scored on a 1-yard run with 10:49 to play in the fourth quarter.

Liberty 38, Charleston Southern 7: Ben Anderson passed for 398 yards and three touchdowns, including a 98-yarder to Courtney Freeman, and the Flames (3-5) had 654 yards of offense in a rout of the Buccaneers (1-5) in Lynchburg.

Anderson completed 21 of 33 passes. His other scoring throws covered 35 yards to Freeman and 14 yards to Andrew McFadden. Freeman had five catches for 168 yards, McFadden nine for 112 yards. McFadden also ran for 59 yards.

Stacy Nobles also had a big day for the Flames, rushing seven times for 139 yards.

William and Mary 21, Northeastern 14: Mike Cook threw for 244 yards and one score, and engineered a 41-yard drive for the winning touchdown as the Tribe edged the Huskies in a Yankee Conference game in Williamsburg.

William and Mary (6-2 overall, 4-1 conference) scored 14 points in the final quarter. First, Cook hit David Conklin with a 15-yard touchdown pass as the Tribe tied the score at 14. William and Mary got the ball back at the Northeastern 41 with 2:01 remaining after a punt. A face-mask penalty, two short completions and a 17-yard draw play by Alvin Porch put the ball on the 4 with less than a minute to play.

Northeastern (3-5, 2-5) did not hold as Porch scored with 52 seconds left.

Delaware 27, James Madison 13: Quarterback Leo Hamlett snapped the Blue Hens out of their recent offensive doldrums, rushing for two touchdowns and passing for another as Delaware defeated the Dukes in a Yankee Conference game in Newark, Del.

The Blue Hens (7-1 overall, 5-1 conference) won their sixth consecutive game and extended their home unbeaten streak to 16 games. Delaware used a season-high 465 yards of total offense, including 288 on the ground, to end JMU's 11-game road win streak in the conference. The Dukes are 6-2 overall, 4-1 in the Yankee.

Hamlett, a Walter Payton Award candidate as the top player in Division I-AA football, completed nine of 18 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown and rushed for a season-high 71 yards and two scores.

The victory forged a four-way tie for first place in the Yankee's Mid-Atlantic Division standings. Delaware, JMU, Villanova, and William and Mary each have one conference loss.

Villanova 20, Richmond 3: Clint Park threw two touchdown passes, and the Wildcats' defense had 11 sacks and held the Spiders to 29 rushing yards in the second half en route to a Yankee Conference victory in Richmond.

Park connected with Josh Dolbin for a 25-yard touchdown in the first quarter and hit Brian Finneran for a 10-yard score in the third quarter for Villanova (6-2, 4-1), ranked No.17 in Division I-AA.

Richmond (2-6, 1-5) came into the game averaging 171 rushing yards and gained 219 yards on 52 attempts. Joe Elrod had 110 of those yards on 16 attempts, but he lost 85 yards on the sacks, eight of them in the second half.

Elrod was 14-of-23 for 196 yards with two interceptions. Minoso Rodgers had 78 yards on 23 rushes, but managed only 5 yards on eight carries after halftime.

Hampton 20, S.C. State 14: The Bulldogs fumbled on their first two possessions of the second half, and the Pirates turned both into touchdowns en route to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory in Orangeburg, S.C.

South Carolina State fell behind 20-7 when Antonio Ricks completed a 10-play, 78-yard drive with a 2-yard run.

The Bulldogs took the ensuing kickoff and drove 80 yards in 14 plays. Halfback Kenny Bynum, who finished with 189 yards, scored his second touchdown of the game from 1 yard. Cedric Oglesby's extra point made it 20-14 with 1:20 left.

Wide receiver Mike Jenkins had 64 yards on four catches to set a Hampton career record with 2,173 yards receiving.

Guilford 33, Emory & Henry 32: Danny Strelkauskas threw four touchdown passes, including a 26-yarder to Junior Lord on a fourth-and-nine play in the fourth quarter, as the Quakers (3-4, 2-2) upset the Wasps (5-2, 3-1) in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Greensboro, N.C.

Chris Snyder had a chance to win the game for Emory & Henry, but missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with 2:05 left.

Oliver Jordan rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown for the Wasps.
