A day after major-league baseball players announced they had reached a tentative labor deal with owners, acting commissioner Bud Selig said Sunday he hadn't scheduled a meeting to consider ratification.
Meanwhile, a management source said owners probably would allow the players who need service time from the 1994 strike to become eligible for free agency to file provisionally and assume there will be a labor agreement that grants them the service time.
Several management sources said it was unlikely owners would meet this week, but they said owners may gather next week for a vote on the deal, which requires approval from at least 21 of the 28 clubs.
BASKETBALL Rage puts first win in books
The Richmond Rage, after three season-opening losses, recorded its first American Basketball League victory by edging the Colorado Xplosion 72-71 in Richmond.
``It feels great,'' said Rage guard Dena Evans, a former Virginia standout. ``I think all of us feel relief and a definite sense of accomplishment.''
But the Rage, which led by six with under two minutes to play, had to hold off a frantic Colorado rally. Edna Campbell cut the lead to one in the final minute with the Explosion's seventh 3-pointer of the game. But Charlotte Smith, whose last-second 3-pointer won the 1994 NCAA championship for North Carolina, missed a three-footer with two seconds remaining.
