HIGHLANDER GOLFER 2ND IN BENEFIT

Radford freshman Phil Bowers shot a 2-under-par 70 to tie for second through the first round of the Chris Cothran/Radford University Invitational tournament Monday at Draper Valley Golf Club.

Bowers is tied with South Carolina-Aiken's Jamie Stanley and Bluefield's Mike Meade. USC-Aiken's Jason Snow carded a 69 for sole possession of first place.

Snow's team is in first place at 282, followed by Appalachian State at 297 and Western Carolina at 299. The Highlanders are in fourth place with 303. Virginia's Blue team is tied for sixth at 310 and VMI is in last place with 321.(Results in Scoreboard. B4)

UVa's Michael King fired a 73 to tie three others for 10th place.

Today's final round also will be at Draper Valley. Proceeds from the tournament go toward a scholarship established in Cothran's name. Cothran, a former Highlanders golfer, was killed in a car wreck in August.

In other sports news in the region:

* K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke, who attends Palmer Tennis Academy in Tampa, Fla., won the Mid-Atlantic boys' 16 tennis championship by defeating Yorke Allen of McLean 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 at Sedgewood Tennis Club in Bluefield.

This is the final of six championship tournaments featuring the top 32 players in the U.S. Tennis Association's Mid-Atlantic region. Hippensteel was playing in his fifth, and this was his first championship.

Hippensteel was seeded No.1 and won four matches after a bye in the first round. Allen was seeded No.2.

* Roanoke's field hockey team opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament play today with visiting Bridgewater.

The fourth-seeded Maroons (8-4) play the No. 5 Eagles (8-8) at 3 p.m., with the winner advancing to play the survivor of No. 1 Eastern Mennonite (17-1) and No. 8 Randolph-Macon Woman's College (2-15) on Friday.

In other games today, second-seeded Randolph-Macon (11-6) plays host to No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan (7-8) and No. 3 Lynchburg (11-6) plays host to sixth-seeded Sweet Briar (6-11).

Eastern Mennonite has won four of the past five titles.

* Jim Hobgood, a former Cavaliers player, will serve as the analyst this season on Virginia men's basketball radio broadcasts. He replaces another former Cavaliers player, Marc Iavaroni.

Hobgood, who lettered at UVa from 1971-73, is in the insurance business in Richmond.

``We're excited about having someone like Jim working with our network,'' said Kyle Denzel, vice president of Virginia Sports Marketing. ``He is very knowledgable about the game, as well as the basketball history of the University of Virginia. Jim will be a very strong addition to our radio broadcasts.''

* The kickoff for Virginia Tech's football game against East Carolina on Nov. 9 has been pushed back to 7 p.m. for television. ESPN2 will show the game.
