RETIRED PITCHER EWELL BLACKWELL DIES

Ewell ``The Whip'' Blackwell, an All-Star pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds who later played on the Yankees team that won the 1952 World Series, died of cancer Tuesday at 74.

The 6-foot-6-inch Blackwell was nicknamed ``The Whip'' for his dazzling side-arm delivery. In 1947, Blackwell set a National League record for right-handers when he won 16 consecutive games.

He retired in 1955 with a career 82-78 record and 3.30 ERA.
