The Radford University men's soccer team pulled off a major upset Wednesday night, beating North Carolina 1-0 in Chapel Hill, N.C., to hand the Tar Heels their fourth loss in six games.
The Highlanders (8-9-1) scored the lone goal of the evening at the 5:26 mark when Kevin Kelly won control of a loose ball in front of the Tar Heels' net and drove it past UNC goalkeeper William Woodroffe.
North Carolina (7-6-1) outshot Radford 19-8 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks, but could not score - misfiring on several opportunities.
In other college sports news in the region:
* The VMI basketball team was picked to finish third in the Southern Conference's North Division by media covering the league.
Marshall was a unanimous pick to finish first in the North. Tennessee-Chattanooga was the first-place selection in the South, followed by defending tournament champion Western Carolina. (Complete list in Scoreboard. B4) Western Carolina is coached by former Radford assistant Phil Hopkins.
VMI lost five seniors from last season's 18-10 team.
``We're so young,'' Keydets coach Bart Bellairs said at Wednesday's conference gathering in Greensboro, N.C. ``We're very, very athletic. Whatever we lack, we'll try to make up with hustle and work.
Bellairs is 28-27 in two seasons at VMI.
* The Virginia Tech men's soccer team extended its winning streak to a school record seven games with a 1-0 win over Appalachain State in Boone, N.C.
Mark Ludwig scored the Hokies' lone goal with 15 minutes left in regulation. Tim Young and Matt Whalen were credited with assists.
Freshman Mark Barnett, in his first collegiate start, got the shutout in goal with three saves.
With the win, the Hokies jumped to 12-6 overall to break Tech's all-time record for the most wins in a season.
* Kerry Jacobs and Ashley Keller each scored as Shenandoah downed Ferrum 2-0 in a Dixie Conference women's soccer game in Winchester. Shenandoah (5-10 overall, 2-3 conference) outshot Ferrum 10-3. The Panthers are 5-7-3, 1-4-0.
* John Hatfield converted a throw-in from Jeremy Churchill in the 80th minute as the Shenandoah men's soccer team shut out Ferrum 1-0 in a Dixie game in Winchester. Only 13 shots were taken in the game, with Shenandoah (6-8, 3-2) holding the Panthers to four shots, two in each half. The win assured the Hornets of at least a .500 record in Dixie play, the first time they have done that in four years of conference play. The Panthers are 5-10, 3-3.
* Karin Treese scored two goals and Erica Reineke added a goal and an assist as the Washington and Lee's women's soccer team beat Randolph-Macon Woman's College 5-0 in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament in Lexington. Randolph-Macon Woman's finished its season at 9-9.
In another game, Lisa Franzino scored two goals and Meredith Arnott added a goal and an assist as Roanoke blanked Guilford in Salem. Washington and Lee will face Roanoke in a semifinal game at Randolph-Macon in Ashland at 2p.m. Saturday.
PREPS Hannah, Dangerfield set pace
Rockbridge County's Jason Hannah and Christiansburg's Laura Dangerfield each added a regional title to their district titles won last week in the Region III cross country meet at Virginia Tech. (Complete scores in Scoreboard. B4)
Blacksburg won the boys' team title and Christiansburg the girls' title.
Hannah covered the 3-mile course in 15:53 to outdistance Blacksburg's Clay Schwabe, who finished in 16:04. The Indians received a boost from the return of John Patterson (12th place) and Matt Chisholm (14th) from injuries.
Dangerfield won in a time of 19:10, with Rockbridge County's Kelly Repair in second with a time of 19:41.
The top four teams and 15 individuals will compete in the Group AA meet Nov.9 at Great Meadows in Woodbridge.
* Cave Spring and Franklin County advanced to the finals of the Roanoke Valley District volleyball tournament tonight at 7p.m. at William Fleming High School. The Eagles advanced to the finals with a 10-15, 16-4, 15-12 win over Patrick Henry and the Knights beat William Fleming 16-14, 15-2.
ETC. Sullivan in hunt for golf title
Chip Sullivan shot a 72 and was four strokes back in fifth place after two rounds of the PGA Assistant Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club at the Reserve's in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Scott Smith of Daphne, Ala., carded a 70 to set the pace with a 5-under-par 139.
