CFW Communications Co. of Waynesboro and R&B Communications Inc. of Daleville said they plan a vast expansion of their service area for a new digital form of wireless telephone service.
CFW and R&B already hold a license to provide personal communication services in Roanoke and surrounding counties. The companies have said they plan to begin offering the services in the Roanoke area by next fall.
The two companies said this week they have agreed to acquire a portion of a personal communication services license held by GTE Wireless for the Cincinnati metropolitan trading area. They will obtain from GTE the part of the Cincinnati license that covers much of West Virginia and parts of Eastern Kentucky, far Southwest Virginia and Eastern Ohio. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In a separate transaction, CFW will acquire GTE's 10 percent interest in a cellular partnership that serves Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro and the counties of Augusta, Highland and Rockingham.
CFW and R&B together will sell their existing combined 60 percent interest in a Roanoke cellular partnership, which covers Roanoke, Craig and Botetourt, to GTE for about $13.2 million.
All the transactions are subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission.
