Salem police are trying to identify the body of a 25-to 35-year-old man found Thursday afternoon inside Tabernacle Baptist Church in the 1900 block of East Main Street.
A church employee found the body about 1:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of the building in a corridor between two classrooms, said Deputy Chief Jeff Dudley.
The man was estimated to have been dead for approximately 48 hours. A preliminary autopsy was performed, but no cause of death was determined, Dudley said.
"We're just looking at it from every angle," he said.
Police said the white man had brown hair and brown eyes, was about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall and was wearing a black "Phantom of the Opera" T-shirt and blue cloth shorts.
Anyone with information should call Salem police at 375-3078.
