WARRIORS CLINCH PIEDMONT

Magna Vista clinched a tie for the Piedmont District championship by beating Fieldale-Collinsville 36-27 Friday night in Collinsville.

Magna Vista (9-0 overall, 4-0 district) got the ball with six minutes left in the fourth quarter and a three-point lead and drove 70 yards to secure the victory.

With the score 30-14, Donnell Blackstock of Fieldale-Collinsville returned a kick 85 yards for a touchdown and Kevin Franklin caught a 27 yard pass to make the score 30-27.

Parry McCluer 46, Craig County 12: The Fighting Blues clinched a tie for the Pioneer District crown with a 34 point win over the Rockets in New Castle.

Parry McCluer (3-0 district, 7-2 overall) had 16 different running backs carry the ball led by Mike Clark with five rushes for 63 yards. As a team the Fighting Blues had 341 yards of total offense. Jarvis Pauley led Craig County (0-3 district, 0-9 overall) with 114 yards on 14 carries. The Rockets had 244 yards of total offense.

William Byrd 40, Rockbridge County 19: At Lexington, quarterback Frank English ran for 333 yards and four touchdowns as the Terriers overpowered the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District game.

English scored on runs of 10, 56, 8 and 7 yards as Byrd (6-3, 4-2) amassed 494 yards rushing against the Rockbridge defense. O.J. Thomasson had 138 yards on 22 carries and added two scores for the Terriers.

Rockbridge (3-6, 2-4), which trailed by only six points until Byrd erupted for 15 fourth-quarter points, was paced by sophomore Clay Hobson, who ran for 80 yards and consecutive kickoffs 87 and 81 yards for touchdowns in the third quarter.

The Wildcats were hindered by the loss of Travis Clark. The Rockbridge quarterback, who threw for 1,075 yards in the club's first eight games, broke his foot Tuesday in practice and is out for the season.

Chilhowie 31, Pocahontas 0: Charlie Goble rushed for three touchdowns as the Warriors won a non-district game over the Indians in Chilhowie.

Goble scored on runs of 10, 45 and 32 yards as Chilhowie (9-1) dominated the game with a strong defense led by Sean Guinn.

Goble finished with 185 yards on 20 carries.

Randy Shupe rushed 24 times for 123 yards for Pocahontas (6-3).

Northside 20, Alleghany 13:John Doss scored all three touchdowns for the Vikings (6-3, 5-1) in a Blue Ridge District victory over the Mountaineers (0-6, 1-8) in Low Moor.

Doss rushed for 153 yards on 23 carries. His one-yard touchdown in the third quarter tied the score at 13. The fourth quarter was scoreless for both teams until Doss scored on a 16-yard run with 2:46 remaining for the game-winning touchdown.

Shannon Johnson rushed for one touchdown and threw for the other for the Mountaineers.

Rural Retreat 40, Grayson County 28: Gene Fields had 163 yards and four touchdowns as Rural Retreat beat the Blue Devils in a non-district game in Independence.

Fields had scoring runs of 9, 4 and 4 yards, and also returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown as the Indians (7-2) pulled away in the second and third quarters.

Rural Retreat quarterback Wayne Terry added a pair of touchdowns on runs covering 13 and 3 yards.

Grayson County (5-4) got a pair of touchdowns from Brandon Smith and a 44-yard touchdown run from Chad McMillian.

Radford 23, Floyd County 20: The Buffaloes moved inside Radford's 20-yard line twice in the final minutes, but the Bobcats stopped the drives and hung on for a Three Rivers District road victory.

Marlon Wesley scored two touchdowns for Radford (5-4 overall, 2-2 district), which built a 17-0 lead in the second quarter. Quarterback Tony Urchull passed for two scores and ran for another TD for Floyd (6-3, 2-3).

Northwood 25, George Wythe 12: Steven Rose rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and Travis Chapman added a pair of touchdowns as Northwood won a Hogoheegee District game in Saltville.

Northwood (4-5, 2-3) broke a 12-all tie with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter on runs by Chapman covering 33 and 47 yards. Rose scored on a 59-yard run in the first quarter and a 76-yard run in the second quarter.

George Wythe (2-8, 2-4) got a 20-yard touchdown run from Bubba Collins and a 4-yard run for a score from Damian Taylor.

Bland County 34, Fort Chiswell 22: At Bland, J.B. Lambert scored on touchdown runs of 40, 39 and 39 yards to propel the Rockets to the Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers.

Bland County finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the district. The Rockets will learn next week whether they make the Group A playoffs.

Lambert finished with 172 yards on 12 carries to lead a Bland ground game that produced 375 yards. Keith Bourne had 93 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Jason Hancock added 79 yards on eight carries.

Fort Chiswell (2-7, 1-3), which fell behind 20-0 in the first quarter, was led by J.T. Thomas, who ran for 100 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Graham 40, Patrick County 20: The visitors from Bluefield literally ground out a non-district victory over the Cougars, piling up 421 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 43 attempts.

Walter Kennard led the G-Men (7-3 overall) with 147 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries. Patrick County (1-8) got two touchdown runs from David Morrison.

Martinsville 49, Laurel Park 14: The Bulldogs ran up a 28 point lead against the Lancers and cruised to the Piedmont District win in Martinsville.

Martinsville (3-1 district, 8-1 overall) controlled the ball on the ground and had five touchdowns on the ground, four by Manti Venable. Venable finished with 21 rushes and 143 yards. Jess Wade converted all seven point after touchdowns and threw one touchdown pass late in the game.

Covington 46, Bath County 28: William Stewart rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries to lead the Cougars to a Pioneer District victory in a scoring fest over the Chargers in Covington.

Stewart scored on runs of four, one and one yard. Grover Price rushed 26 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns on runs of 34 and five yards. The Cougars (2-7, 2-2) rushed for a total of 345 yards. Brent May made his first career varsity start at quarterback. He completed six of 13 passes for 64 yards and an interception.

The Chargers scored on the first play from scrimmage in the game on a 69-yard run by Anthony Pusey. Covington then fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Bath drove to the Cougars' three-yard line but were held on fourth down.

Pusey rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. He scored on runs of 69, 2 and 15 yards. The Chargers fell to 5-4, 1-2.

Glenvar 35, Shawsville 7: Glenvar took advantage of six interceptions for a road victory over its U.S. 11 neighbor in the Three Rivers District.

Jim Scalera rushed 12 times for 123 yards and a touchdown for the Highlanders (4-5 overall, 3-2 district). Seth Noonkester ran for two touchdowns. Brian Caswell had the only score for Shawsville (3-6, 0-4).

Narrows 24,Galax 6: The Green Wave used a strong rushing attack and good defense to handle the Maroon Tide in a Mountain Empire District game in Narrows.

Narrows (1-3 district, 3-6 overall) was led by David Turner who despite a broken hand rushed 16 times for 131 yards and Dalton Smith who rushed 14 times for 110 yards. Galax (1-4 district, 2-7 overall) was led by Chris Lineberry's 174 yards on 20 carries.

Jefferson Forest 47, Liberty 6: The Cavaliers (5-4, 4-1) held the Minutemen (4-6, 2-4) to only one touchdown as they cruised to a Seminole District victory in Bedford.

The Minutemen's only touchdown came on an 85-yard kickoff return by Johnny Harris is the fourth quarter. Frank Wade scored two touchsdowns for the Cavaliers on runs of nine and 15 yards.
