The moon was no longer full, but big and bright enough last week to illuminate the pre-dawn countryside with a chalky color as we moved into the woods for the opening of turkey season.
The white patches of bark on a big sycamore tree gave an eerie glow, and what few leaves that remained on the maple trees had turned from pinkish red to cherry red to full crimson, their color vivid enough to be seen even without help from the sun.
