Milk mustaches come in presidential flavors

NEW YORK - On the eve of today's election, President Clinton and Republican nominee Bob Dole showed up in milk mustaches in an advertisement paid for by a milk-processing group.

But, unlike the celebrities who have been in similar ads over the past two years, neither Clinton nor Dole posed for this one.

The milk processors had their ad-makers put computer-generated mustaches on stock photos of the candidates and never sought clearance from either, because they are considered public figures.

Kurt Graetzer, who oversees the milk education program for the National Fluid Milk Processor Promotion Board, said the ad was meant to encourage people to vote, not to drink more milk as the other ads have done. The ad appeared at a cost of more than $200,000 in Monday's editions of USA Today and the news magazines Time and Newsweek, Graetzer said.

A spokeswoman for the Clinton-Gore campaign said campaign officials had contacted the milk processors' ad agency and ``expressed concern over the use of President Clinton in this fashion.''

The Dole campaign also said it was unaware of the ad before it ran. ``However, given the fact that Bob Dole is a champion of both children and agriculture, the campaign is not terribly upset,'' said spokeswoman Christina Martin.

Snapple to push its diet drinks

CHICAGO - The Quaker Oats Co. is placing its bets on Snapple's diet category, announcing a new flavor and marketing campaign Monday aimed at reviving the struggling juice and tea drinks line.

The six-drink diet line has been one of the few jewels in Snapple's 46-drink lineup, with sales rising more than 14 percent so far this year. The entire line saw sales drop 23 percent during the summer.

Snapple in mid-December will introduce diet Cranberry Raspberry Cocktail while dropping diet Mango Madness and in January will launch a new campaign called ``Escape with Taste'' that features an under-the-cap instant win promotion.
