Lindsay Coleman led four players in double figures with 18 points Monday as Parry McCluer defeated Covington 55-41 in a regular-season playoff in Hot Springs to earn the top seed in the Pioneer District tournament.
Parry McCluer (15-6) won the middle two quarters 38-9 to put away the Cougars. Nikki Barber added 12 points, Chi Clark 11 and Clarissa Johnson 10 for the Fighting Blues.
Covington (13-6) could not recover from a disastrous third quarter in which it managed only two points. Joann Helton led the Cougars with 15 points.
Graham 58, Carroll County 35: Tamala Oakes had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the G-girls to a Southwest District tournament victory in Graham.
Beverly Proffitt had an outstanding all-around game for Graham (5-14), registering 11 rebounds, seven steals and seven assists.
Carroll County got 12 points from Angie Farmer, but was outscored 39-18 in the decisive second and third quarters when Graham picked up its defensive intensity.
George Wythe 55, PH-Glade Spring 38: Megan Johnson scored 30 points and had 15 rebounds to power the Maroons past the Rebels in the first round of the Hogoheegee District tournament at Wytheville.
Johnson scored 17 points in the first half, as George Wythe (10-11) took a 29-10 lead into the intermission. She was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. The Maroons play top-seeded Northwood on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at John Battle High School.
Ashley Neese led PH-Glade Spring with 16 points.
Rural Retreat 58, John Battle 53: Jane Grubb scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Indians past the Trojans and into the semifinals of the Hogoheegee District tournament.
Mary Brewer scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and also blocked six shots for homestanding Rural Retreat, which will play Chilhowie in a quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Dana Booher scored a game-high 19 points to pace John Battle, which outscored Rural Retreat 20-16 in the second quarter but couldn't keep up in the third.
The Indians suffered from a poor shooting percentage in the first half, but Grubb scored six points in the final quarter to keep John Battle at bay.
