ICE PILOTS' BURST DOOMS EXPRESS

The Roanoke Express scored early, but Pensacola scored late - and often - as the Ice Pilots defeated the Express 5-3 in an East Coast Hockey League game Wednesday at the Pensacola Civic Center.

Jeff Cowan's fifth goal of the year, with 1:36 gone in the first period, gave the Express a 1-0 lead. The Ice Pilots tied it up less than five minutes later when Chad Quenneville scored on a power play.

Roanoke's Jeff Jablonski scored the only goal for either team in the second period on an assist from Jeff Loder with 2:46 gone.

After 40 minutes, the game bore a resemblance to Roanoke's 2-1 victory over Birmingham the night before. The mirror, and the Express (5-6-1), cracked moments later.

Pensacola (2-4-2) scored four consecutive goals in 8:52. Claude Jutras began the onslaught just over five minutes in, and Glen Metropolit, in his first game after being sent down from Quebec of the International Hockey League, scored two in a row. Tony Furnnette scored the final Ice Pilots goal. (Summary in Scoreboard. B4)

Roanoke's Matt O'Dette forged the final margin with a power-play goal with two seconds left.
