ADKINS, Howard Edward, 40, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, November 6, 1996, at home. He was preceded in death by his father, Buford Adkins; a sister, Christina Adkins. Surviving are his wife, Ramona Adkins; stepson, Ronald Storey; his mother, Bette Wyatt Adkins; one sister, Laura Payne; one nephew, Nathan Payne, all of Roanoke. BEARD, John Will, 74, of Roanoke County, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 1996 at home. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Servi ce. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Beard was a member of Grandin Court Baptist Church, The American Legion Post No. 3 and The Bedford Loyal Order of the Moose. He is survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth Beard of Roanoke; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Michael Beard, Michaeleen Beard and grandson Joshua all of Eugene, Ore; Timothy Charles Beard of Roanoke; one brother and sister -in-law, Richard Carr Beard and his wife Melva Beard, sister-in-law, Thelia Pruitt of Trenton, Mich; two nephews, three nieces and other extended family and many friends. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 1 p.m. Friday, November 8, 1996 with The Rev Philip Motley and The Rev. Carol Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. BELCHER, William Arlie, 83, of Floyd, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 1996, at his home. Survivors are his wife, Vera V. Belcher, Floyd; one son and daughter-in-law, Lois T. and Dorothy Belcher, Meadows of Dan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Victor Allen, Fancy Gap, Paulette and Lloyd Marshall, Stuart; three brothers, Edgar Belcher, Meadows of Dan , Walter Belcher, Waitman Belcher, both of Floyd; three sisters, Myrtle Belcher, Patrick Springs, Clayton Creedle, Blue Ridge, Ruth Dillon, New Castle; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren. BENNETT, Margaret Wingfield, 84, of Bedford, died Wednesday, November 6, 1996 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was born in Bedford on May 26, 1912, a daughter of the late George Dawson Wingfield and Lucy Logwood McGhee Wingfield. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Bennett; two daughters, Charlotte White Bennett, Be dford and Shirley B. Bray and her husband Stuart W. Bray, Danville; a sister, Mary Johnson Wingfield, Bedford; two grandsons, David Wayne Bray and Keith Dawson Bray, both of Blacksburg. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, November 8,1996 at 2:30 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Howard Green officiating. The family will receive friends at their residence. BENNINGTON, J. Phil, 91, of Bristol, Va., formerly of Independence, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 1996 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn. Born September 29, 1905 at Comers Rock, Va. to Waldo Walton and Ella Catron Bennington. He was united in marriage in 1928 to Beryl Wright, a school teacher and operated a country store and farmed in Comers Rock, Va. until 1943. From 1943 to 1950 he was a wholesale grocery salesman for Galax Mercantile Co., Galax, Va. He entered politics in 1950 and was elected Commissioner of Revenue for Grayson County, where he served three terms. Following his tenure of office, he was elected Clerk of Court for Grayson Co., where he served two terms. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Independence, Va. and had over 50 years membership in Independence Masonic Lodge #129, A.F. & A.M. and Independence Order of Odd Fellows Ledge #258, Independence, Va. He served for many years as chairman of March of Dimes and many other charitable organizations in Grayson County. Surviving include his wife, Beryl Wright Bennington; son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Rosemary Bennington, Bristol, Va.; son-in-law, David Smith, Lake Wells, Fla.; three grandsons, James L. Bennington, Chattanooga, Tenn., Larry Smith, Winston-Salem, N.C., Randy Smith, Asheville, N.C.; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, Va. with the Rev. James L. Bennington, the Rev. Ralph Kidd and Mr. Douglas Turner officia ting. Interment will be in Comers Rock Cemetery. ENGLISH, Charles Edward, 80, of Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, November 5, 1996, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born March 16, 1916, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Nannie Bet Williams English. He was retired from MW Windows and was a self-employed farmer. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Posey, Sidney, Roy, Robert Fual English; three sisters, Mary Ferguson, Alpha McCrickard, Myrtle Spradlin. Surviving are his devoted brother and life-long companion, James Monroe English of Rocky Mount; one sister, Frances Pagans of Wirtz; two special nieces, Kathy E. Bolen of Texas, Betty Southall of Rocky Mount; special nephew, Robert Matthew English of Penhook; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Virginia Meeks of Penhook; special friend and neighbor, Lois H. English of Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, November 8, 1996, at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. FITGERALD, William L., (``Hambone''), 74, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, November 3, 1996. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine E. Fitzgerald; and one son, John L. Fitzgerald. Survivors include one son, William L. Fitzgerald III of Roanoke; four daughters, Martha (Lionel) Smith, Richmond, Verna (Albert) Brown, Wyandanch, N.Y., Thomasine Brown and Joyce (John W.) Smith, both of Roanoke; one sister, Irene Fitzgerald; and sister-in-law, Sophronia Brown, both of Roanoke; 35 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be Friday, November 8, 11 a.m., at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Dr. J. Eugene Young will officiate. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. FULLER, Wilhelmina Huff, (``Pat""), 66, of Roanoke, claimed her eternal victory Wednesday, November 6, 1996, surrounded by her loved ones. She and her husband moved to Roanoke in 1961 when he became the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church. A Florida native, she was Roanoke's Mother of the Year in Family Life in 1986 and served as a volunteer at both Community and Lewis-Gale Hospitals. Next to her devotion to family was her love for the Adult Sunday School Class bearing her name, which she taught for over 30 years. A fervent advocate of missions, she was instrumental in greatly expanding the church's vision for world evangelism. She is surived by her husband of 44 years, Dr. Charles G. Fuller; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mark Charles and Vickie Lynn of Roanoke, John David and Joy Evelyn of Roanoke, James Michael and Julia Elizabeth of Savannah, Ga.; six grandchildren, Ryan Marshall and Kendra Allyse of Roanoke, Jessica Lauren, Joshua David, Jacob Daniel, of Roanoke, Rebekah Jordan of Savannah, Ga.; three sisters, Mary Burns, Betty Jean Begor and Ruth Almond of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and nieces and nephews. The celebration of her home going will be held at First Baptist Church, Third and Franklin, in Downtown Roanoke on Friday, November 8, 1996 at 11 a.m. The services will be led by Charles Ward and Doyal Spence, assisted by other ministers and members of the church. Interment will be at Sherwood Cemetery, with Lotz Funeral Home of Roanoke, handling the arrangements. The family will visit with church members and friends on Thursday between 3 and 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church. GREENWAY, Rena Mae, 80, of New Castle, died Monday, November 4, 1996. She was a faithful charter member of the Church of God of Prophecy. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, November 9, at the Church of God of Prophecy, with interment in the Greenway Family Cemetery. HALL, Bobby Ray, 50, of Hillsville, passed awa y Wednesday, November 6, 1996, in Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was born July 24, 1946. HICKS, Janie Marie Blakeney, 49, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, November 2, 1996. She was employed at the Kroger 460 Store, where she worked in the deli as an assistant clerk. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marvin Fields officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

HUSKE, Claire Gray, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 1996. A daughter of the late Herbert F. Huske and Claire Gray Huske, she was also preceded in death by three brothers, Gray, Herbert, and Clement Huske; and sister-in-law, Louise Jones Huske. She was a lifetime member of St. John's Episcop al Church, where she served in many capacities and sang in the choir. For a number of years, she was employed by Hollins College and was also secretary to Raymond Barnes when he wrote ``The History of Roanoke."" Survivors include Mrs. Nancy Gray Lucado, Roanoke; several other cousins; and special friends, Noble and Annie Marshall and Tom Newman of Highland Springs, Va. KNEPP, Ruth J., 79, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 5, 1996. She was a member of Unity Roanoke Valley. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Daniel V. Knepp; two daughters and son-in-laws, Diane K. and Jim Carpenter, Melville, N.Y., Nancy and Robert Adams, Vinton; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Phillip J. MOTLEY, Fannie Ellnor, 67, of Glade Hill, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, November 5, 1996, at Eldercare. Born September 6, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Bennie and Annie Wells of Callands. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Lloyd Motley; four sisters, Francis Parsons, Nina Williams, Barbara Riggs, Patsy Ayers; four brothers, Eugene Wells, Alvin Wells, Shirley Wells, Leslie Wells. She was an active member of Mt. Carmel Church until her illness. RADCLIFF, M. Lawrence, 73, of Blue Ridge, passed away Tuesda y, November 5, 1996 at his home. He was a member and life long deacon of Blue Ridge Church of the Brethren. He served with the Fifth Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II, and was retired from the Electrical Department of the Norfolk & Western Railway. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary F. Radcliff; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Ronnie Updike, Roanoke; grandson, Ashley Updike, Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Margaret Radcliff, Blue Ridge; two nephews, David and Carlton Radcliff; special friends, Lawrence and Audrey Wilkerson, Salem. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 11 a.m. Friday, November 8, 1996, with the Rev. Marty Doss and the Rev. Gene Burris officiating. ROSEN, Samuel, 78, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, November 5, 1996, at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Berson Rosen. Mr. Rosen was the former owner of Lichtenstein Credit Agency, and a member of the Roanoke Camera Club, where he received many awards for his photography. Surviving are his children, Susan Castner of Michigan City, Ind., Sybil Rosen of High Falls, N.Y., and Joshua Rosen, Denver, Colo; his grandchildren, Jason Castner, Michigan City, Ind., Jessica Heitmann, Chicago, Ill; great-grandchildren, Austin and Jared Heitmann. Funeral services will be at the graveside, Beth Israel Cemetery, 11 a.m. Friday, November 8, 1996, with Rabbi Jerome Fox officiating. RUSS, Doris Julia Honeycutt, 53, of 109 South Creek Dr., Travelers Rest, S.C., died Tuesday, November 5, 1996. Born in Hickory, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Grover and Josie Kenworthy Honeycutt. Mrs. Russ was district Director of Nutrition for the Greenville County Health Dept. (DHEC). She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and earned her Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her internship at Duke University and was a Registered Dietitian. She was a member of the Greenville First Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Eldon J. Russ, of the home; two daughters, Kirstin Julie Russ of Raleigh, N.C. and Kimberly Carol Russ of Greenville; a sister, Peggy Honeycutt of Roanoke, Va.; and two brothers, Blake Honeycutt of Hickory and Mal Honeycutt of Floyd, Va. SLUSHER, Alice Belcher, 81, of Radford, widow of Roy T. Slusher, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. She was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Slusher. Survivors are two sons, Thomas Slusher, Spartanburg, S.C., Les Slusher, Radford; one brother, Marvin A. Belcher, Fairlawn; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. STALKER, Fannie Davis, 85, of Rich Creek, died Wednesday, November 6, 1996, in the Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, W.Va. She was born in Virginia on January 12, 1911, and was the daughter of the late George Lloyd and Ollie Wise Thomas Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward James Stalker. She was a member of the Rich Creek United Methodist Church, the Katheryn Gwinn Circle of the United Methodist Women, and the Lakeland Chapter #74 O.E.S. of Narrows. She is survived by a son, Raymond A. Stalker of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Frances S. Kertesz, Peterstown, W.Va. and Jean S. Martin of Gardena, Calif.; two brothers, Peyton A. Davis of Rich Creek and C. P. Davis and his wife, Mary, of Princeton, W.Va.; a sister, Bobbie M. Davis of Rich Creek; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Davis of Jessup, Md., Inez Davis, Roanoke, Leila Stalker, Roanoke; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. STAPLES, Howard Andrew, (``Jack""), 72, of Fishersville, died early Monday, November 4, 1996 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. He was born September 14, 1924 in Roanoke County, a son of French Arlington and Anna Rose Edwards Staples. He was a brakeman for the Norfolk and Western Railroad and was a World War II Army veteran, having served at Normandy. Survivors include two sons, Howard A. Staples Jr., Roanoke, Barry Wayne Staples, Waynesboro; four daughters, Mrs. Ronnie (Connie) Baber, Waynesboro, Mrs. Michael (Pat) Garnett, Fishersville, Mrs. Nelson (Jeanne) Moore, Roanoke, Mrs. Mark (Emily) Haynes, Waynesboro; three brothers, David Staples, Roanoke, Paul Staples, Charleston, S.C., French Staples, Roanoke; two sisters, Betty Morris, Cummings, Ga., Nancy Bain, Hallisher, Fla.; and eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Virginia Staples. A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 6, 1996 in the Waynesboro Chapel of Etter-Reynolds Funeral Service conducted by the Rev. Stanlee Kaufman. The family received friends Tuesday, November 5 at the funeral home at other times at the home of his daughter, 314 Viburnam Dr., Waynesboro.

TAGLIO, Michael, (``Tag'z''), 15, of East Ridge Drive, Murfreesboro, Tenn., died Saturday morning, October 26, 1996, at Middle Tennessee Medical Center, from injuries received in an auto accident Friday night, October 25, 1996. He was a native of Roanoke. Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 1996, at Third Baptist Church with Rev. Don Edwards officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Michael and Trisha Stevens Taglio, Murfreesboro; sisters, Maribeth and Sarah Taglio of Murfreesboro; grandparents, Ezra and Elizabeth Stevens, Moneta, Michael Anthony Taglio, Tarrytown, N.Y.; great-grandmother, Louise Holdren, Moneta; uncle, Glenn (Pat) Stevens; aunts, Linda (Jimmy) Huddleston and Mary Ann Alexender. Michael was a member of Southeast Baptist Church. He was a freshman at Oakland High School, where he was a member of the freshman basketball team, a member of the OHS cross country team, and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Memorials in memory of Michael may be made to Southeast Baptist Church or Oakland High School. Visitation with the family was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 28, 1996, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel.

WHITLEY, Howard Rufus, 58, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, November 5, 1996. Mr. Whitley was a driver for Yellow Cab Company. He attended the Open Bible House of Prayer and was preceded in death by his father, Harvey A. Whitley; and his brother, Jake Whitley. Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Wingo, Richmond; his mother, Elizabeth Price Harden, Roanoke; his brothers, Bobby Whitley, Roanoke, Harvey Alle n Whitley, Troutville; his sisters, Dora Hypes, Roanoke, Mary Garrett, Pleasant Hill, Calif.; two grandchildren; his special friends, Mary Rogers, Philip Puckett, and Rick Cecil, all of Roanoke. A graveside service will be held in Sherwood Memorial Park Friday 11 a.m. with the Reverend Basil E. (Skip) Davis officiating. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel after 12 noon Thursday.

WOLFE, Henry Clay, 93, of Marion, died Wednesday, November 6, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, Seaver-Brown Chapel.
