BUS CHASE NOT SUSPECT'S FIRST POLICE CONTACT

A Baltimore man charged with stealing a bus and leading police on an 80-mile chase that ended in Virgnia had run-ins with Mass Transit Administration police before.

Dewane Edward Rickman was angry with family and a transit officer who had arrested him last year, said Virginia State Police Lt. M.G. Millner, who supervised part of the chase Tuesday night.

``Part of it was domestic, and part of it had to do with a police encounter in Baltimore,'' Millner said.

Rickman was charged Jan. 4, 1995, with trespassing for allegedly climbing over a fence at the Owings Mills metro station and with failing to pay a $1.25 subway fare.

Rickman's latest encounter with police came late Tuesday when he stole the Maryland Transportation Authority vehicle from a Baltimore garage, police said.

Police first tried to pull him over in Howard County. He was arrested early Wednesday after eluding police for 2 1/2 hours.

The 30-to-60-mph chase down Interstate 95 ended about 40 miles south of Washington, D.C.

Rickman was being held without bail Thursday after his arraignment on charges of grand larceny, failing to stop for a police officer and reckless driving.
