FARMER, Hubert Roy, Sr., 85, of Route 2, Dublin, died Sunday, November 10, 1996, in Pulaski Community Hospital. Born on March 4, 1911, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was a son of the late Kelly Crockett Farmer and Rosa Linkous Farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Edith Burton Farmer; four brothers, Eugene, Kelly Jr., Clarence and Ray, and three sisters, Helen F. Price, Ruby F. Franklin and Elsie F. Pack. He is survived by four daughters, Shirley F. Meador of Dublin, Betty F. Radford of Christiansburg, Peggy Childress of Fairlawn and Linda F. Hall of Dublin; one son, H. R. Farmer Jr. of Hollywood, Calif.; one brother, Julius B. Farmer of Bluefield, W.Va.; three sisters, Ella Brown of Dublin, Hazel Chrisley and Margaret (``Pidge"") Roan of Pulaski; a special caretaker, Irene Morris; 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Community Christian Church in Newbern, with the Rev. Mat Showalter and the Rev. Eddie L. Callahan officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday at Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home. The family will meet at the home of a daughter, Shirley F. Meador, Fair Acres.
FARRELL, Susan Pascoe, 71, formerly of Blacksburg, of 1237 Viewmont Drive, Schenectady, N.Y., died after a brief illness on Thursday, November 7, 1996. A brief graveside service will be conducted by Pastor Gary Schroeder of Luther Memorial at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 11, 1996, in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. HALE, Peyton Coley, 82, of Newport News, died of prostate cancer at home on Friday, November 8, 1996. Mr. Hale was a native of Wytheville and was a Peninsula resident for 55 years. He retired as a paint contractor in 1994. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific, France and Wales. Mr. Hale was a member of Brookland United Methodist Church in Richmond and was an honorary member of the Mens Friendship Class at Orcutt Baptist Church. Mr. Hale also was a member of Warwick Lodge #1711, Loyal Order of Moose. Mr. Hale is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy Lee Tench Hale; two sons, William C. Hale Sr. of Gloucester and Robert P. Hale of Newport News; one daughter, Sue C. Hale Hayes of Gloucester; three sisters, Vivian Hale of Montpelier, Virginia Alley of Pulaski and Ruby Fanning of Wytheville; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Anne T. Hale Turner, who died in 1985; four brothers, and four sisters. Mr. Hale leaves family and dear friends across the country. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James Doyle and the Rev. Kenneth Trinckle, both of Orcutt Baptist Church. Moose rites will be performed by Warwick Lodge #1711. Interment will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. JOHNSON, Barbara, (``Josephine""), of Bedford, departed this life Saturday, November 9, 1996 in Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Salem, Va. She was born June 27, 1940 to the late Cephas and Gertrude Johnson and was preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Pauline J. Payne. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Vanessa J. Preston and her husband, William D. Preston; a granddaughter, Barbara Preston; two grandsons, William and Cheyney Preston; a great-grandson, Jamaal Preston all of Bedford, Va.; and a host of cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, 1996 at the Washington Street Baptist Church, Bedford with the Rev. Alvin H. Henderson officiating. JOHNSON, Jesse James, 68, of Pleasant Hill Road, Lynchburg, died Friday, November 8, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Grace Vest Johnson of Lynchburg. Born in Bedford County, he was a son of the late Robert Johnson and Annie Lyle Johnson. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Elaine Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of Clearview Baptist Church and a retired machinist from Aerofin Corporation. He had also been formerly employed by Ericsson and he served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joe E. Johnson and his wife Pamela, and David M. Johnson of Lynchburg; two daughters, Doris J. Wilson and her husband Tom of Rustburg and Patsy J. Banks of Lynchburg; his stepmother, Juanita Johnson of Bedford; three brothers, Murrill Johnson, Gary Johnson and Bobby Johnson of Bedford; two sisters, Betty J. Laughon and Priscilla J. Goff of Bedford; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Greene. Interment will be in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence. JOHNSON, Marie Moncure, 84, of 931 Lake Drive, Bedford, died Saturday, November 9, 1996 at her residence. She was born in Norfolk on October 4, 1912 a daughter of the late Lee Sample Bower and Annie Elizabeth Williams Bower. She was a member of Bedford Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Garland E. Johnson Sr., Bedford; a son and daughter-in-law, G. Edward Johnson Jr. and his wife, Evelyn, Bedford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne Bower Johnson Maxwell and her husband, Tom of Bedford and Huntington, W.Va.; Jean Marie Cashion and her husband, Willie of Richmond; two brothers, Lee Bower and Dan Bower both of Newport News; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 1996 at Bedford Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. PORTERFIELD, Lois Eliza, 78, of Westwood Health Care Center in Bluefield and formerly of College Avenue Apartments in Bluefield, died Saturday, November 9, 1996, at Westwood. She was born in Maybrook and was a daughter of the late James Burke and Mary Cleveland Porterfield. She was a retired secretary from Betsy Ross Bakeries with several years of service. She was of the Protestant faith and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Survivors include nephews, Alexander Saunders of Roanoke and David Hoge of Bluefield, and nieces, Mrs. Jean Ingram of Waynesboro, Barbara Comer of Roanoke and Mary Lou Johnson of Clarksville, Ind. PUTNEY, William Kemper, 90, of Big Island, died Sunday, November 10, 1996 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth Burch Putney. Born in Big Island, February 10, 1906 he was a son of the late George Kemper and Nannie Cobb Putney. He was a former member of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, a member of Waddell Lodge #228 AF & AM, Gordonsville, Va., a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Kazim Shrine Temple, and a member of Big Island Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Irvin T. Putney and two brothers, Duke A. Putney and John I. Putney. In addition to his wife, Mr. Putney is survived by four sons, William K. Putney Jr. of Martinsville, Lacey E. Putney and wife, Elizabeth of Forest, Pual P. Putney and wife, Glenna of Big Island and Macon C. Putney and wife, Janet of Bedford; one daughter-in-law, Kay P. Gantt of Summerland Key, Fla.; one brother, Ellis H. Putney of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Martha B. Dawson and husband, Gordon B. Jr. of Big Island, Amber B. Pokropski and husband, Edward of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; ten great-granchildren; and four stepgrandchildren. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Big Island Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Edmonds. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place at 4 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery. ROBINSON, William Pierce Jr., (``Buddy Bill""), 79, of Shawsville, died Saturday night, November 9, 1996 in Lewis-Gale Hospital. He is survived by one sister, Loraine Ryan of Shawsville. He was a member of McDaniel Lodge #86 AF & AM Christiansburg. SVOBODA, Margaret Rawlinson, of Leesburg, Fla., died Saturday night, November 9, 1996 at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Born in Wichita, Kansas, June 21, 1909, she moved with her family to Virginia where she graduated from Blackstone High School. She studied at Blackstone College for Women and Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) and graduated in 1932 with a degree in Home Economics. She completed post graduate work in 1932-33 at Western State Teachers College (Western Michigan University). Mrs. Svoboda spent her life helping others. Growing up as the eldest of seven children of a Methodist minister and a school teacher, she learned to accept responsibility at an early age. She devoted her professional career to extension programs from VPI and was one of the driving forces behind establishment of the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center near Roanoke, Va. She held positions for the State of Virginia Department of Agriculture as home economist and for the Federal Farm Security Administration as district supervisor. A post-retirement job was Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in Salem, Va. In recent years, she has been a resident of Hawthorne Village and Lake Port Square in Leesburg, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Svoboda and her sisters, Mabel Rawlinson and Jean Pobbly. Surviving siblings are John Rawlinson, Decatur, Ind., Georgian Tashjian, Cupertino, Calif., Woods Rawlinson, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Mary Creason, Grand Haven, Mich. A memorial service will be held at the Page Theus Blanchard Funeral Home in Leesburg, Fla on Friday, November 15, 1996 at 2 p.m. Charity donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
