TEACHER OF THE WEEK

If there's one thing Tiffany Kelso has learned in her first year of teaching it's that you can't fool kids.

"When you're tired, you can't let it show," Kelso said. "If you do, they'll ask you what's wrong. If you're not interested in the subject matter, they'll know it. These kids are very observant."

Kelso, who teaches American studies, is a product of Roanoke City Schools. She attended Addison Middle School and City School. At Roanoke's Patrick Henry High School, Kelso decided she wanted to become a teacher. She received a Tomorrow's Teacher scholarship and graduated from Virginia Tech.

Kelso said she has enjoyed her job but has been somewhat surprised at all the paperwork, a common refrain from first-year teachers. "That's the overwhelming part," she said. "I didn't realize there would be so much."

One of the ways Kelso said she has developed a rapport with her pupils is by showing them she's interested in them both in and out of class. "I like to go to their soccer and football games," she said.

Kelso is single and in her spare time enjoys reading and conducting research on a variety of topics.
