A group that arranges for hunters to donate deer meat to the poor wants to beat last year's record and distribute 125,000 pounds of venison to food banks this winter.
Making the goal depends on the financial support, said David Horne, director of Bedford County-based Virginia Hunters Who Care. He said it will cost about $75,000 to get that much meat to the needy.
One deer provides about 50 pounds of meat and costs about $30 to process, he said.
Last year, the group collected 103,000 pounds of venison.
