ETC. Johnstone to appear at banquet
Former major league outfielder and well-known flake Jay Johnstone will be the speaker for the sixth annual Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame induction banquet Feb. 2, 1997.
In a big-league career spanning 1966-85, Johnstone played for the California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. His lifetime batting average was .267 with 1,254 hits and 102 home runs.
Johnstone's most memorable hit was in Game 4 of the 1981 World Series when his pinch-hit, two-run homer helped the Dodgers come back and beat the Yankees 6-3. Los Angeles won the Series four games to two. In 1976, he hit .778 and slugged 1.111 for the Phillies in the National League Championship Series against Cincinnati.
His real fame came for his antics and his success after his playing days. A comic banquet speaker, he has written a book and hosted a cable television show, ``The Lighter Side of Sports.''
Founded in 1991, the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame covers the seven-county area of Roanoke, Franklin, Bedford, Botetourt, Floyd, Craig and Montgomery Counties and the independent cities within those boundaries.
