PIZZA CARRIERS HAVE A ROUGH NIGHT

Two pizza delivery men were robbed Tuesday night in separate incidents as they tried to make deliveries.

Three men robbed and beat a 19-year-old Pizza Hut delivery man Tuesday night on Patton Avenue Northwest, police said.

Mark Callahan said he arrived at 205 Patton Ave. N.W. about 9:30 p.m. and found two men sitting on the porch. As he handed over a soda and pizza, Callahan said, one of the men pushed him to the ground and both of them beat him. A third man came from behind the house and the three of them robbed him, he said. One of the men said he had a gun and stuck what Callahan said felt like a pencil in his ear.

Callahan said he drove back to the Pizza Hut at 326 Orange Ave. N.E., where he works, and called police. He was treated at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for cuts and bruises.

Later Tuesday night, about 11:50 p.m., Christopher Derrick Doughton, 26, was robbed by an armed man wearing a ski mask who jumped out from behind a bush in the 2400 block of Montvale Road Southwest.

The man brandished a handgun and demanded the delivery man's money. Doughton complied, and the suspect fled on foot.

Also Tuesday, police said, a man held an employee of a Northwest Roanoke business at knifepoint, demanded money and then fled after the employee hit the man in the head with a broomstick.

About 2:40 p.m., Roanoke police responded to a report of an attempted robbery at Quality Tire Service at 305 11th St. N.W. Police said an employee was sweeping the service area when a man walked up behind him, held a knife to his neck and demanded money. The employee grabbed the knife and struggled with the man, striking him with the broom handle.

The man ran north on 11th Street. The employee was not seriously injured, police said.
