Roanoke begins loose leaf collection

City of Roanoke crews will begin collecting loose leaves in zones Northwest 1-A, Northeast 2-A, Southwest 3-A and Southeast 4-A Monday morning. Residents should have leaves raked to the curb.

Maps identifying leaf collection zones are available at all city libraries and fire stations, and in the Nov. 7 edition of Neighbors.

Bad weather may cause delays in the leaf collection schedule.

Residents who bag leaves may place them on the curb on their regular trash collection day. To help the city crews, place leaf bags apart from regular trash.

County library hosts book fair, storytelling

The Roanoke County Public Library and the Friends of the Library will sponsor a Children's Book Fair Monday through Nov. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at Headquarters Library on Virginia 419 and at Hollins Branch Library, 6624 Peters Creek Road, Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Books will be discounted 20 percent.

Storyteller Kathy Coleman of Wise County will be at the county libraries Wednesday and Nov. 21. Coleman has toured the country for 12 years telling tales celebrating Appalachian folklore. She entertained ambassadors and diplomats in Washington, D.C., last summer at the invitation of Vice President Al Gore.

She will perform Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Glenvar Branch Library and at 7 p.m. at Hollins Branch Library, and Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. at Vinton Branch Library and at 7 p.m. at Headquarters Library.

Workshops for parents of teens Saturday

Parenting workshops are being offered on Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. by Roanoke City Schools in partnership with First Union National Bank, Center In The Square and Central Council Parent Teacher Association. Topics covered will include peer pressure, study skills, discipline, understanding adolescents and choosing an education program.

The workshops will be held on the second floor of First Union National Bank, 213 S. Jefferson St. Free parking will be available at the Allright lot on the corner of Church Avenue and Jefferson Street. The workshops are free, and day care and lunch will be provided for children 3 to 11. For more information or to register, call 853-2816.

Red Ribbon Week winners announced

Drug and alcohol prevention efforts at three Roanoke schools were honored recently by the Roanoke Valley Drug and Alcohol Abuse Council and RAYSAC (Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition.)

Roanoke Catholic Lower School, Hidden Valley Junior High School and William Byrd High School each will receive $500 to be used for substance abuse prevention.

Schools were judged on the level of parent, student, and faculty involvement in the 1996 Red Ribbon Week activities.

Woodrow Wilson plans to be heard

A neighborhood meeting to discuss the reconstruction plan for Woodrow Wilson Middle School will be held on Tuesday at the Woodrow Wilson auditorium. Placement of students while the school is closed will be discussed. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. For more information, call 853-2816.

Vinton holiday parade needs performers

The Vinton Chamber of Commerce is seeking entries for the Vinton Christmas Parade to be held on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. Marching units, floats, clowns and others are invited to participate. Cash prizes will be awarded. The entry fee is $15. Deadline for entry is Friday.

Cloverdale club holds signups

The Cloverdale Athletic Club is holding basketball signups for boys ages 9 to 17 and for girls ages 13-14 today from 6-8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Cloverdale Elementary School.

Run benefits Leukemia Society of America

Runners and volunteers are needed for the Star City Half Marathon and 5K Run Nov. 23. The event will benefit the Leukemia Society of America.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. at Victory Stadium. Awards will be given to the top five male and female finishers as well as the top three male and female runners in each age group.

Salem holds holiday activities, events

The city of Salem will begin its Christmas festivities on Dec. 6 with the lighting of the city Christmas tree in Library Square at 6 p.m. The lighting will be followed by the Salem Christmas Parade at 6:30 p.m.

On Dec. 7, Ye Olde Salem Christmas Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be carriage rides, ice sculpting, music from local choirs, dance performances and a variety of activities for children. Kids can visit Santa Claus at the Salem Public Library and mail their letters to Santa at the Old Salem Post Office. Free cider will be available outside the Salem Library. At 4:15 p.m., there will be a sing-along and yule log burning at the Salem Farmer's Market. For more information about the Salem festivities, call Salem Parks and Recreation at 375-3057.

The Salem Museum will be open from noon-5 p.m. on Dec. 7 and will be holding tours of historic holiday homes on Dec. 8 from 2-5 p.m. To find out more about the tours, call the Salem Museum at 389-6760.

Magnet school information available

Parents interested in learning more about Roanoke's magnet school program may attend the Magnet School Fair on Nov. 23 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the cafeterias at William Fleming High School. There will be exhibits, demonstrations, performances and representatives from the Magnet Office to explain the different magnet programs. Admission and parking are free. Gifts needed for holiday program

Operation Santa Claus, sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley, needs donations to help give Christmas gifts to more than 700 Roanoke Valley residents who are mentally disabled.

Donations of new clothing and personal items are needed. Gifts may be delivered until Dec. 4 to Blue Ridge Community Services, 301 Elm Ave. S.W., or The Jefferson Center, 541 Luck Ave., Suite 314. Gifts should be unwrapped, though wrapping paper may be included with a gift.

Cash donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase gifts. Checks should be made out to the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley and mailed to: MHARV, P.O. Box 592, Roanoke, Va. 24004.
