WHITAKER GETS PRISON SENTENCE

Melvin Whitaker Jr., a former University of Virginia men's basketball recruit, was sentenced to 31/2 years in prison Thursday for slashing a football player's face during an argument.

Whitaker, 20, of Raleigh, N.C., was rejected by Albemarle Circuit Judge Paul M. Peatross Jr. for the state's youthful offender program, which would have made him eligible for release in less than six months.

Peatross said he was concerned that Whitaker would be released too soon under the program that separates first-time offenders from the general prison population.

``This case no one wins,'' Mark D. Henshaw, Whitaker's attorney, said after the half-hour sentencing hearing.

Whitaker pleaded guilty in June to the malicious wounding of Maurice Anderson, 21, a defensive tackle for the Cavaliers. He could have received up to 20 years in prison.

Whitaker was never enrolled at Virginia.

* Tim Braun scored 16 points and junior guard Mike Henrich had 11 to lead the Roanoke College men's basketball team to a 100-80 exhibition victory over the Antigua Mongrels.

Freshman Ramsey Hathaway led all rebounders with six.

The Maroons and Mongrels each made 33 of 73 field goals, but Roanoke hit 28 of 40 at the free-throw line.

* Nancy Lieberman-Cline scored 29 points to lead Athletes in Action to an 82-48 victory over Virginia Tech in a women's basketball game in Blacksburg.

Cline, a basketball Hall of Famer, was 14-of-18 from the field. Freshman center Kim Seaver led the Hokies with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

* Roanoke College's Tina Boyce and Ali Ogelsby each earned first team All-ODAC field hockey honors. Roanoke's Christine Boyle and Chanda Braselton of Hollins made the second team. Lyncburg senior Sarah Gioffre was the league's player of the year.

* Ferrum College placed two athletes on the All-Dixie Conference women's soccer second team. They were forward Susan Sautter and back Shannon Sayre.

* Eight members of the Hollins College varsity fencing team will present an exhibition at 11:45 a.m. Monday, Nov.18, at the Roanoke Airport Marriott.

Peter Westbrook, a six-time Olympic sabre fencer who holds a record 13 national sabre-fencing titles, will speak to those in attendance.

ETC. Calloway shakes, rattles, rolls

It was late Wednesday night at AMF All Star Lanes in Roanoke. Ted Calloway was shakin' all over.

``I was a little nervous rolling the second ball in the 10th frame,'' Calloway said. ``After that I felt good and relaxed.''

The result was the Roanoke bowler's second career 300 game. He's also rolled several 299s.

Calloway, who was bowling in All Star's Silhouette League, has a 188 average.

* Roanoke's Chip Sullivan, a teaching pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club, was tied for 12th after three rounds of PGA Tour qualifying school at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence.

Sullivan shot a 3-under-par 69 and had a total of 210 heading into the final round today. The top 25 golfers advance to the final stage of qualifying in December in Santa Barbara, Calif. Former PGA Tour regular Ed Humenik led the event with a 10-under total.
