Roanoke's Chip Sullivan, a teaching pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club, has earned a berth in the final PGA Tour qualifying school in December.
Sullivan finished seventh Friday at one of the regional qualifying schools in Florence, S.C. He shot even-par 72 on the Country Club of South Carolina course to finish at 282, five strokes behind medalist and former PGA Tour regular Ed Humenik.
The top 25 golfers advanced to the final stage of qualifying, starting Dec.3 in Santa Barbara, Calif. Approximately 200 players will be competing for 40 cards on the all-exempt 1997 PGA Tour. The next 75 finishers will get a Nike Tour card.

* Forward Matt Leonard scored seven minutes into the first overtime as Virginia held on to defeat Duke 3-2 in an ACC men's soccer tournament semifinal game in Charlottesville.
Troy Garner gave Duke a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the game but midfielder Billy Walsh tied the score for the Cavaliers eight minutes later. Duke took a 2-1 lead when Garner fed sweeper Josh Henderson who converted on a 12-yard shot at the 29:51 mark. Walsh tied it with his second goal of the game three minutes before halftime.
Virginia will face Maryland in the final at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Charlottesville. Maryland defeated Wake Forest 5-1 in the other semifinal.
* The Radford volleyball team defeated UNC-Greensboro in five games to advance to the semifinals of the Big South tournament in Baltimore. The Highlanders won 15-12, 8-15, 17-15, 15-17, 15-7 to pick up their first win in a five-game match this season. Radford will play the winner of a match between Maryland-Baltimore County and Winthrop at 1:30 p.m. today.
* Former Martinsville High School standout Maurice Spencer scored 19 points as VMI downed BC Tegaz Debrecan 75-61 in an exhibition basketball game at Lexington. VMI jumped out to a 42-24 halftime lead and coasted to victory.
Brent Conley scored 14 points for the Keydets and Eric Mann added 13. Boris Maljkovic had 19 points for the Hungarian team.
* Brendan Haywood, a 7-foot center from Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C., announced Friday that he was signing a letter-of-intent to play basketball for North Carolina.
Haywood, rated one of the nation's top 50 prospects by recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons, picked the Tar Heels over Wake Forest. Earlier, the Deacons had signed coveted point-guard prospect Robert O'Kelley from Memphis, Tenn.
* An expected 400 runners and walkers will participate in the 11th annual Star City Half Marathon and 5K on Nov. 23. The Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America and the Star City Striders sponsor the event, which will honor Willie Richardson, a local leukemia patient.
