New state tax credits that become available Jan. 1 to owners who rehabilitate historic homes and business buildings will be explained at a public workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Park Learning Center, 1212 Fifth St. S.W.
John Wells, tax credit coordinator for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, also will explain federal rehabilitation tax credits for income-producing historic properties. Virginia's new credits, beginning at 10 percent next year and increasing to 25 percent by 2000, apply to state-certified renovations of historic homes as well as businesses.
Governments generally consider buildings to be historic if they are eligible for listing as state or national landmarks or are "contributing" structures in state or nationally registered historic districts. In Roanoke, most buildings in Old Southwest, the City Market and along Warehouse Row are among those eligible for tax credits.
For information, call the Roanoke Regional Preservation Office, 857-7585, or the Roanoke City Department of Planning and Community Development, 981-2344.
