James Madison's Bethany Eigel finished eighth in the NCAA District II Championships at Boston University to qualify for the NCAA National Cross Country Championships.
The former Christiansburg High School standout completed the course in 17 minutes, 10 seconds, the fastest time ever for a JMU runner in a 5,000-meter cross country race. She is the first JMU women's runner to qualify for the nationals since the Dukes began competing in Division I in 1982.
* Jason Dowdy (Cave Spring High School) finished 34th as the Virginia Tech men's cross country team took eighth place in the District III qualifying meet held at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
Jennifer Conner placed 71st as the Hokie women finished 25th in the meet.
* Jason McNicholl of Roanoke College finished 134th out of 184 runners in the NCAA Division III national championships in Rock Island, Ill. McNicholl ran the 8,000-meter course in 26:34, just 13 seconds off his best mark of the season.
