A large crowd nearly filled Pearisburg's Holy Family Catholic Church Monday at services to honor the community-minded life of Edward Guy Skidmore.

A West Virginia native, Skidmore was a Navy veteran of World War II and a longtime employee of the Hoechst-Celanese Corp.'s Celco Plant.
Among the groups Skidmore helped to found were the Celco Credit Union and the Virginia Tech Credit Union. He was also a charter member of the Narrows Fire Department, and belonged to local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
Skidmore was also a past president of the Parish Council at Holy Family Catholic Church and was a Boy Scout troop leader. He was a volunteer tutor at Narrows Elementary School and had graduated from a Leadership Development Program sponsored by the Giles County Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Z. Skidmore of Narrows, three sons, a daughter and five grandchildren. Survivors also include two brothers and two sisters.
Burial was in Fairview Cemetery of Narrows. The family has requested memorial donations be sent to The Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg or the Ronald McDonald House at 2224 S. Jefferson St., Roanoke, Va., 24014.
