RADFORD MEN ROLL 100-67 IN EXHIBITION

Anthony Walker had 20 points to lead five Radford scorers in double figures as the Highlanders beat Mid South AAU 100-67 in a men's basketball exhibition game Monday night at the Dedmon Center.

Leslie Ballard came off the bench to score 16 points, 10 in the first half, for Radford. Craig Hodges led Mid South, a team of former college players, with 24 points.

In other college sports news in the region:

* Fourth-ranked Clinch Valley has earned a berth in the NAIA Division II football playoffs for the second consecutive season.

The Highland Cavaliers (10-0) will play host to 8-2 Westminster (Pa.) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carl McConnell Field in Coeburn. Clinch Valley started its football program in 1991 and last year became the first school to qualify for the NAIA playoffs in five years or less.

* The Bridgewater men's basketball team has lost starting point guard Craig Tutt for at least eight weeks because of a broken right foot.

Tutt, who sustained the injury during an exhbition game Nov.12 against Antigua, had surgery Monday. He was a first-team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection last season, when he averaged 18 points and led the Eagles to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

* Winthrop's Jennifer Churchill, a preseason All-Big South Conference selection in women's basketball is scheduled to undergo surgery today to remove a benign tumor from her liver.

Churchill, a sophomore center, is expected to be hospitalized for a week in her hometown of Cincinnati. She is expected to rejoin the team when she receives medical clearance.

* Lynchburg College's Gina Overstreet has been honored as a National Softball Coaches' Association All-America Scholar-Athlete for 1996. Overstreet, a Liberty High School graduate, started 24 games in left field or as the designated player and batted .282 with 16 runs scored for the Hornets. She also had to have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher (on a 4-0 scale) to be nominated for the award.

ETC. USTA serves up honors

Tennis officials from the Roanoke and Blacksburg areas dominated the awards at the recent USTA/Virginia Tennis meeting and awards luncheon in Charlottesville.

Among the honors: Anne Jones, who has guided the women's program at Virginia Tech for 15 years, was named coach of the year; the Roanoke Valley Tennis Association was named organization of the year; Michael and Mary Hunt, who work with the RVTA, received the award for outstanding service to the community; Betty Barr was named tournament director of the year for organizing the Commonwealth Games of Virginia competition; and Linda ``Boo'' Andrews was honored as junior programs promoter of the year for her work with the National Junior Tennis League and Junior Team Tennis programs in Roanoke.

* Jeff Sprinkel, the assistant pro at Blue Hills Golf Club, shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for 12th at the Mid-Atlantic PGA Zevo Stableford Championship at the Dominion Club course in Richmond.

Howard Dean and Glen Roberson, both of Hunting Hills Country Club, finished tied for 51st and 57th, respectively.
