An anonymous donor has given Hollins College $500,000 in honor of architectural historian Frances Niederer, who taught at the college for four decades.
The gift will become part of the college's $65 million endowment fund. The interest generated will be used for the Hollins College Artist-in-Residence program, which will be renamed the Frances Niederer Artist-in-Residence program. The program pays to bring artists to campus for a full semester each spring. Although it has existed for several years, it was not permanently endowed to ensure that artists could be invited every year.
Niederer taught art history at Hollins from 1942 to 1980. She published two books in her career: an illustrated history of Hollins College, and a study of the evolution of architectural styles in Fincastle.
