United Way of Roanoke Valley is about three-quarters of a million dollars shy of its 1996 campaign goal.
The charitable organization announced at a luncheon Monday that with one month left in the campaign, it had raised $4.85 million - about $700,000 below its $5.5 million goal.
Heidi Krisch, campaign chairwoman, said a number of participating companies and organizations chose to conduct their employee campaigns this month. But Krisch predicted that by the time the valleywide campaign wraps up next month, United Way will have hit the $5.5 million mark.
The campaign officially began in September with $633,200 already raised by 22 "Pacesetter" companies and organizations.
The $4.85 million represents 87.5 percent of United Way's 1996 goal. In last year's campaign, United Way had raised 86 percent of a $5 million goal by November.
The United Way funds more than 70 programs of 32 human service agencies in the Roanoke Valley.
